289 or 302 is cast into the head in large 3/4" numbers. All you need to do is pull a valve cover to see them. Providing the heads have not been swapped AND it isn't one of the oddball motors that Ford put together with mismatched blocks and heads (right around the change year of late 67 - early 68)

I just added a picture of a head so you can see where it is. It is very probably under caked on oil sludge, but it is there. You can find date codes, foundry mark and the displacement.

    The Answer To Your Question

hey guys this is real!! about the bolt pattern in the main pulley is true!!!! if it has a 3 bolt pulley is 289 and if it has 4 bolt it is a nice 302! i just checked that in a FORD RACING MANUAL!!! so believe it!

    Doesn't matter what your book says - it is wrong. Early 302's have a 3 bolt vibration dampener/pulley. I have 2 early 302's, one a 68 and one a 69. Both are 3 bolt.

Don't believe everything you read, especially from Ford. My 1968 302 had a 3-bolt pulley. Ford changed it around 1970 or so I've heard. As I stated before, the only way to be absolutely sure what you have is to look at the crankshaft casting number on the front counterweight. 289s = 2M, 302s = 2MA or 2MAE.

I believe that 70 and later had the 4 bolts. The early 302's and 351w had 3 bolt dampers.

    289 -302

a ford 302 is simply put . A 289 stroked to 302 cubic inches. si its the first Ford small block stroker motor. easiest way to tell a 289 from a 302 is the harmonic balancer pully on a 289 has 3 bolts holding it on the balancer and on a 302 there are 4 bolts

Supposedly they went to the 4-bolt pulley right around the same time they changed the water pump inlet from the passenger's side to the driver's side.

sixties had 3 bolt pullies, 302 or 289. My cousin's 68 289 casting numbers for the block and heads are 302. It has 302 cast on the heads and stamped on the block. It has been verified to be a 289 crank, the rods have also been measured against stock 302 rods and are longer.

If it is a 68, the only way to be sure is pull the VIN, check the engine code (my cousin's Fairlane VIN says 289 in spite of the block saying 302), or to check the crank and rods themselves. I don't think the 289 was mixed and matched with 302s in 69. Later models have 4 bolt pullies, as mentioned above.

As far as parts go, everything is interchangable between the two aside from crank and rods. Even the mains and rod bearings are the same. In some books, the bore of the 289 is 4.002 and the bore for the 302 is 4.000, but the rings are interchangable according to all parts books I've seen.

And for the record, I've spend quite a bit of time on both sides of the parts store counter with books and computers at my disposal. They're not always right.

I know where there is a VERY early 302 sitting in a guy's shop that has a 3 bolt balancer on it. It is a '67 302 (casting date is 7E22....may 22, 1967) assembly code is 7F2. I do not remember the cast part number on the damper, but the engine dame out of a '68 Mustang. I didn't believe that it was a 302 until I pulled the head & measured the stroke. 3.000". I can get pics of the engine if you'd like.

Besides, there is very little difference between a 289 and 302 block. Some say the cylinders are longer on the 289's but I can't verify that. I've never measured that I can remember. Other than that, they are almost identical. A 302 crank & rods will fit right in with no modifications. Most if not all 302 stroker kits fit just fine in a 289 block as well.

No such thing as a '67 302. 1968 was the first production year for the 302. In fact, late 289s had '68 302 blocks. That was either a fluke, or someone stroked a 289. The numbers on the rods would tell you...

68 model year was the first 302, 67 castings wouldn't be out of line. Early 68's had 289s in 302 blocks.

I'll see if I can get the build date on my cousin's Fairlane.
