hey everyone, yesterday I was reading the mav's booklet and I found out that the compression of the engine is 8.2:1 :( I've seen other cars with higher compression, like 10.5:1  and numbers like that.

What are the benefits of raising the compression? :hmmm:
and how do you raise the compression? :)

Later model mavericks had lower compression because of all of the polution crap on engine. What size engine do you have. My 302 ,of 72 vintage was approx 9.5 compression. You wont find a stock maverick motor with a 10.5 compression ratio. To raise the compression you need to either put in a domed piston of some sort or put on real small cc'd heads, say about 58 cc's or so. there is more details to this ,but this should help. There are pro's and con's to raising the compression . all cost more money. raising the compression requires you to rebuild the motor and this costs MONEY. But you will have more horsepower hopefully. I'm sure others will give you some info too.(y)

pistons and the CC of the heads make compression

pistons are the the main key in compression

Higher comp. ratio = more hp BUT

higher also = end of pump gas

for a street car you goin to want it right around 10-11.5-1 on aluminum heads

right around 10-1 on iron heads for pump gas

my engine is a 92 351w with right around 9.2-1 from the factory with 68cc heads
but now i have 60cc heads and the guy who did my heads said i should have 10-1 now which seams kinda out there for 8cc but could be wrong

Deck clearance (how far above/below the deck surface the piston is when at TDC) and head gasket thickness also affect compression ratio albeit not nearly as much as dome/dish size and chamber volume.

Even the crankshaft stroke has an effect on compression (assuming that everything remains constant except for stroke and rod length).

I use 86 octane pump gas (the 92 octane is more expensive). I just want to raise it a bit, like 9.5 or 10 to make it more streetable. Also, will the mileage be lower if I raise the compression on "normal numbers"??
