i FINALLY got my maverick on the road, it has a lot more low end power than i thought, i'm very satisfied with it...but i can't seem to get any higher than 70 out of it....is this because it only has 3 gears? or am i missing something? would an AOD give me a higher top end speed(not just gonna be my daily driver) 200 I6 1972
ive taken my 250 up to 100, started to get shakey so i backed out, probably could have done more though. dont think i would wast the effort to put an AOD in, you should be going faster without it
that wouldn't even be the speed limit on the hwy out here. should be able to go higher but i guess the question would be what you're going to do in the end and wether it would be smart to spend any $$$$ on it or to go ahead and work towards your final goal. i don't think an aod behind it is going to help it, unless the tranny is the problem.
yes, your trans could be slipping. it could also be a fule problem, maybe your not getting enough gas into the engine to get it up to higher rpms? I had a clogged fule filtter last week and couldnt break 50mph just because it wasnt getting enough fule into the carb. for the $3 it takes to buy a new one thats where i'd start
the filter has been replaced, i had it adjusted today(timing) and had my mechanic look at the front end...he said it's no good..inner and outer tie rod ends, ball joints, and idler arms ar going to be replaced this weekend...than i'll give it a good run, my guess is that it was out of time(because it was...now the engine has more pickup) and i should be able to reach higher speeds...btw my transmission is automatic
Yeah, I've taken my 250 Maverick up to 95 (with vacuum leaks/timing issues) no problem, and she still had some more left in 'er. When I first got it the timing was WAY out of whack and I couldn't touch 70. That was a fun drive home on the 75MPH freeway.
I know this might be a stupid question, but since you just got it back on the road, is the carb opening all the way?
i would hope so...how would i be able to tell this...like i said i just got it timed, and havent taken it out again, i'm gonna wait until the front end is redone, than i'll see how it goes, i hit 70 with the timing set lower than it should be, i can feel more low end power from the engine, but i'm nervous to take it above 50-55 with the way the front end is.
my 250 jumped up to 90 on me...i wanted to go faster but i ran out of gas....i felt stupid explaining that to my dad
The highest I've had my '72 up to was 107. That was this past weekend. (I got in a race with an mid 90's Dodge Ram that didn't think the 'ol Maverick had 100 mph in it ) My car feels really torquey from 70 mph to about 90 mph. Over 100, it just creeps up very very slowly. I had the gas pedal to the floor past 95 mph. At 107, the car was shakeing and I was pretty sure I was going to die, so I just backed off it. This is with the 250 (originally out of my '74 Grabber) which now has around 230,000 miles on it. Ohh, and the Dodge backed off around 103. I had my 200 up over 80 several times without a problem. I'm betting on the timeing being off causing alot of your problems.
My 89 Ranger topped out at 115 mph when new, but only in 4th which was a 1:1 ratio. You'll go faster in direct (1:1) than you will in overdrive. Takes more power to accellerate in OD than 1:1 (Ranger had a 2.9 V6 and 5 speed manual, 3.35 rear)
