Sounds like the rear is a 3.00 gear.
Not the best for performance, but will run a bit high on the rpms at that speed.
Your best bet for performance and highway would be to get a T5.
Find one that has a decently low first gear.
That way you don't have to mess with the 3.00 gears out back.
    AND
You get to lower your cruise RPMs.

    Are you using an OD?
Mine revved that high at 45 mph...
I don't know the rpm for sure, but it seemed like 3500 rpm at 45 mph.
    I was using 245/60/14s, about 25.5" tall...
What combo are you using on your 4.11s?
    Trans and tire?

    Edit:
I also thought about recommending the AOD and slightly shorter gears, however I considered a few things that made me think it wouldn't be as good...
    1) He is dealing with a 70 model. We all know that the smaller tunnel will make the AOD more troublesome.

    2) The AOD would probably cost more.

    3) The AOD doesn't have the steep first gear like the T5, therefore he would end up not only changing the tranny, but he would need to change the gear for good results.

    4) Changing the gear would add even more cost.

    5) The original post indicated a preference for a manual tranny as opposed to an auto.

The question is, are you talking about going to a manual or automatic 4 speed ? Manual 4 speeds are mostly direct in high gear, same as your C-4. All automatic 4 speeds I know of are OD in 4th.
