My 73' maverick is well on it's way to being a 12 second car, but whenever we get the car up and over 5500 we are tossing the alternator belt every time. W e had one friend suggest a deep grove alternator for a hopeful cheaper fix. Does anyone else have knowledge on a deep grove alternator or another way i can get rid of my problem????

make sure everything is lined up and there's no flex in the mounting system. use a good belt and make sure it's tight. i run an alternator with belt to 7200 with no belt problems.:)

Make sure alignment is good, belt is tight, and that belt is not too worn. A newer belt can have a deeper V that fits better than a older belt. I have found a quality brand often fits better than a cheaper off brand.

my son's serp setup cost $20 at the junkyard. or check the alignments on all pulleys, & think about a retainer fixture on the long side of the belt.

we have already adjusted the alignment making sure it is straight. i will have to look into the serpentine system a little further maybe that could work.

Invest in a new belt.....one with "GATOR GRIP". It grips better on a tight radius(y)

Have you considered that you may have:
    Bad alternator bearing
    Bad WP bearing
    Warped pulley
Maybe the fan or other component is out of balance, worn out, or just plain being worked beyond it's abilities.

Whenever I have had this issue, it came down to something just plain too worn or too old for the stresses, or poor mounting.
Any of these make vibration that quickly intensifies as the RPMs go up.
    Then bye-bye belt.
It will happen to serp systems too. Been there.

Go to NAPA and get a "Gator Grip" belt or a shorter one to run waterpump only

Put a straight edge on the pulleys and make sure they are lined up. I used an after-market balancer on mine and the bottom pulley was was about 5/16" off. Had to have a spacer machined to bring it out.

Like mavaholic said, you got to get that thing lined up straight, use some washers or spacers or something to get it to line up.

I had mine doing the same thing (except, not a 12 second car:D ) and found that I was off by just 1/8" or so. At that time, I bought a deep socket and cut it to fit...
