HOw the heck do you put a hose end onto a hose???? I had a 15' section I cut in half... so I have to put hose ends on 2 ends... I get the -4 AN hose ends I ordered... and im staring at it like a monkey doing a math problem This is what I bought. Very first one on the page http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product2_10001_10002_752556_-1 I need to put 2 ends on a hose that do not have ends at all.... how would I do this?
NAFORD told me to wrap electrical tape around it really thick, then cut through the tape to hold the braid together. Then take off all the tape except for maybe 3 layers, then twist it into the fitting. I have a 3" chunk I might install today (between the carb and regulator) if I get the Caltracs installation finished. This will be my first time...
That's basically the same way I do mine except I remove all of the tape. Two other tips that work well for me (which may be in Rick's link which I can't stomach to read): 1) the process goes much smoother for me when I put a coat of light oil on the threads of the fitting & 2) a vice with soft jaws or equivalent goes a long way towards keeping your fittings looking nice when putting them together.
Ha! I was trying to conceal that by hot-linking rather than show the "C" word in a url. To me, horsepower is horsepower, be it Ford, Cheby, Mopar, Briggs and Stratton, [SIZE=-1]Tecumseh, etc. Yes, wrapping the braided line with electrical tape, then cutting it (with a cut-off saw preferably) keeps the cable from fraying and putting hundreds of holes in your extremities. Yep, aeroquip recomends either s.a.e. 30 motor oil or thier special hose lube to lubricate. But thats very important. And *dont* overtighten the fittings. The most common reason they leak is people overtightenig them. I know it dosen't make sense at first, but its true.
Ok... I asked my dad today... my problem is that my line isnt as big around as the threads on the AN fittings... so the electrical tape should solve this problem? He also mentioned the oil also
not to ask a stupid question,.but do you have the same size ends and hose? I use a vice with a cloth in it to keep from snarfing things up, wrap the hose with tape before cutting(electrical, duct, masking.it doesnt seem to matter) a very small spray of lube on the fitting just before seating them together. they can be pesky but shouldnt be causing you that much trouble. good luck.
Its not the lube thats getting me... its the line The actual line part is smaller than the threads on the fittings. I have to put about 8 or 10 rounds of tape on it and then it doesnt want to turn and hold the tape to well. I bought a -4 15' nitrous line and cut it in 1/2... ordered -4 Hose ends for the other ends... Im about 2 give up and say screw it... been a bad week except for getting to go racing today
Are you sure you have the right fittings? I've never done AN lines, but have done several hydralic lines and the fittings always screwed into the lines. If your lines are smaller ID than the OD of the fittings, you'll never put them together. The proper fitting should be a real snug fit, but the line ID isn't that far from the fittings OD.
I have -4 hose and i bought -4 hose ends so yes I have the correct fittings. I think its just smaller braiding on it than normal... The fuel line size AN hose ive dealt with in the past had thicker braiding on it and a rubberized center... this has like a plastic center. The part of the fitting that screws into the inside of the line seems to be the right size, just now the outside.
There are a number of different types of hose ends. Some are screw on reusable fittings and the others are crimp on fittings. It sounds to me like you have the crimp on fittings. You need a press and the dies to swage it on the hose.
