Speaking from experience... I have had SBFs, SBCs, BBFs, and BBCs...
You are absolutely right from a pure racing standpoint.
However, on the street, nothing compares to the sound, smooth rush of torque, and coolness of any big block.
I get all tinglely just thinking about the way the torque brings the front of the car up (without revving to the moon) and pushes you back into the seat against your will. ;)

Absolutly. People ask me why I'm putting a big block w/ 5 spd. in my dart all the time when "it would be faster with a small block and an automatic." And they are right, of course. I just say, 'Yea, but would it be as cool?'

Um, Ok If you take a small block, Bore it, sleave it, stroke it so that you have 500 cu" it is no longer a small block in my book. Is there any small block (400 cu" or less) that can make the same torque or HP as a 460 cu" big block? And if I take a 460, bore it sleave it, and stroke it to 800 cu" are you saying it won't make more HP or torque than a small block?
With the same cam grind, same compression ratio and the same mods the engine with the most cubic inches is going to make the most HP.
Anything that can be done to a small block can be done to a big block. The best part about cubic inches is that if you have more you don't need to do as many mods to get the same, or more, torque and HP.
I have heard it for years, seen it work for years and listened to small block owners dispute it for years:
The only substitute for cu" is more cu".
That is why they don't use small blocks in semi-tractors, railroad trains, and large ships. They even use big blocks in off-shore racing boats and the old unlimited hydroplanes. (before turbines)

yanno... i have seen a few mavericks on ebay saying they're big blocks without modified shock towers. a couple years back i saw one that had a 428 big block....

well, ok... extremely hard to find big block... unless, you had a few highley saught after cars like the 69 mercury cougar cobra jet with the 428. but thats neither here nor there...

i'm sure someone can do it, but be on the look out....

some people call a bored and stroked 351W small block <--- a big block... we all know it's not. it's then considered a 428 small block.

that might not be the case in this instance, just be careful, some people are ignorant and/or like to think you're stupid.:tiphat: <~~ notice the greasy car salesman.
