I am rebuilding an 8" rear out of a 76 Granada, and running into some problems with the rear axle bearings. When I install the axles, the bearings do not end up flush with the housing, but stick out about 1/8" of an inch. I measured the depth of the housing and the width of the bearing, and sure enough, the bearing is wider than the housing depth. So there is no way that the bearing would not stick out.

Is that how it is supposed to be? It seems odd that the backplate and the seal would not press flat against the housing. The bearing I ordered was BCA RW207CCRA. I searched through the forums and found scant mention of this problem.

    Thanks!

Did you take into account the brake backing plate and the shim behind it? Those two there will account for the 1/8".

There is a bearing reatainer and the backing plate but they go over the bearing The bearing sticks out past the flange on the housing so the backing plate and retainer isnt flush with the housing. is there a third spacer that goes between the housing flange and the bearing retainer?

I just installed a mini spool in the 8" in my 77 Comet today, the bearing fits thru the backing plate and there was a shim behind the backing plate. So you've got the parts in this order: bearing housing, bearing, shim, backing plate and then the retainer that overlays the other stuff.

Thanks Baddad457. The bearing retainer and the backing plate are reversed. The problem is very clear now.
