so i took my buddy for a ride in the Grabber last night, his exact words were "all you here is road noise in this thing" he has a 70 chevelle no carpet or underlayment, his car is super super quiet, most all my mavs have been this way....My guess would be its just a cheap suspension set up, cuz its looks skinny and mickey mouse ish lol the suspension is tight all bushing look good....it just needs an idler arm....i think its just the norm for these cars
I wonder if it could be the guage of the metal used to build it? Consider that the Chevelle is a lot heavier car and was built more towards like a luxury midsize than a compact economy car like ours. Anyhow, I don't think of it as road noise...I call it 'road feel!'
wonder if that what it is the gauge metal? my dad has a 64 falcon, even his car rides nicer and is quieter...and its the same setup!!
a-body gm's have a full frame under them with rubber bushings between it and the body. im sure that goes a long way compared to the uni-body construction of a maverick, he may also have some kind of factory undercoating too. it depends on what you mean by road noise as well. i dont have any carpet in my mav and i can hear every little peble hit the floor pan.
I hear very little road noise in our '72 daily driver. Mostly just wind noise from the rotted door seals.
My Maverick does not have a lot of road noise. Mavericks are "uni-body" construction. A Chevelle is a full-frame car. The Maverick is going to have more road noise, but it should not be excessive if the sound deadener materials are present, and if the suspension is in good condition. Different types of tires also produce different levels of road noise. It could simply be the tires in your car's case...
Mine just squeaks like an old bed frame! I think I need to find a way to grease the top of the coil spring braces as that's where it comes from.
That squeek can usually be fixed by putting a grease gun on the zerks behind the front tires inside the wheel well. Not sure what that is called. Take off the tire, look in and you will see a zerk fitting there. It is kinda hard to get to. I am currently in the process of putting jute on all the surfaces I can get to, including under the carpet, under the back seat, under all plastic interior panels, inside the trunk, and inside the rear quarterpanels. I figure that will quiet things down a bit. Besides, all the 3M spray adhesive and new carpet makes the car have "New Car Smell" This is much better than the "Burnt Carpet" smell it has had for the past 5 years...
How about inside the doors? They are just hollow drums amplifying all the outside noise. Doesn't rain water get inside the doors naturally? The jute would most likely get mildewy and stinky if I used it inside the door. I might use a plastic sound deadener inside them to muffle the noise...
I greased that the first week I had the car. It sounds like the top of the coil springs are squeaking in their mounts.
