Just one dunder-head's opinion.....and consider he can't be much of a car guy if he doesn't know Ford already brought back the "Maverick" name for their Aussie SUV.

About a decade ago, I read an article in Consumer Reports about how the Maverick was a great seller, and one of the best, most reliable "econo-cars" of the early 70's...they called it one of the very few "cheap" cars that weren't built cheap.

There's always going to be some 'nad dissing Mavericks.....Mavericks are one of those cars with mixed reps....with most of the negatives points being simply unfounded trash talk from people who don't know any better....repeating crap they heard from someone else who knows even less.

fine by me....I'll let my Mavericks do the talking when someone starts bad-mouthing them.....but very few people who notice mine say anything bad about them, even in their not-very-impressive "unrestored" state....and face it, as long as there's any bad "rep" on the Mavericks/Comets, they'll remain one of the very quickly dwindling list of old classics that the average guy can still afford to buy and restore.

A few months ago, a Mustang fanatic "friend" asked why I'd choose to fix up a Maverick instead of a much better, more valuable, more popular old Mustang. I asked him what he paid for his last project, a bare, and I mean BARE shell of a 69 Mustang fastback (no eng/trans, no front sheetmetal, no glass, no interior, with rusted floors, quarters, torque boxes and firewall)
"$2,500" he said...I informed him that I bought BOTH my complete, in good, restorable condition Mavericks, Grabber hood, spoiler, truckload of extra parts, AND a running 4-door parts car for $1,650 total, and I'll have BOTH of mine running, on the street, and hitting the Cruise nights YEARS before his rust-bucket basket-case Mustang ever even gets dragged out of his garage for paint.
Then he says, "Yeah, but my Mustang will be worth $25,000 when it's done" so I reply, "Yup, if it's concours quality, which sucks for you considering you'll have $30,000+ into it to get it anywhere near that condition" then I added "My Mavericks may never be that valuable, but I won't ever be afraid to drive them either...I can fix 'em up, and modify them all I want....stock, modified, raced out...their value will always be more than I have invested, but I didn't buy them for their value.....I bought them for the same reason you bought that Mustang....to have a nice, classic ride....the difference is, I'll be enjoying BOTH my cars while you're still restoring yours, and I won't end up with so much time and money invested in the cars that I'll be too paranoid to risk that huge investment by driving them....and after all, THAT'S why I have them, to fix up, drive, and enjoy. Their potential value, the attention and admiration I get,...that's all gravy"

Nowdays, he's trying to talk me into selling him one of my Mavericks. (fat chance! LOL)

Besides, most the people that bad-mouth Mavericks drive generic Chevoldsmobuick every-cars, or foreign cookie-cutters so bland they'd only dream of ever equaling the Maverick's history, legacy and notariety....good or bad.

Let 'em insult and gripe....we know better, and so does everyone who meets us and gets to know us and our cars.

Not meaning to offend anyine here, but many folks' memories of the maverick are a 170 ci four door granny grocery getter.

That's what I remembered about them until I started looking around recently.

    I changed my mind.

im sorry, but i did laugh a little when i read that.

for all the people who bad mouth mavericks I think even more people dont even know what they are. now if i was in the market for a new car i would probably be more drawn to something called "maverick" then another taurus reissue. i know alot of you have had good expierences with them but everyone ive ever know was pretty much a POS. if any car strikes me as a no thrills granny car it would definatly be a taurus. but then again if i grew up in the 70's like most of you older guys i might have a diffrent opinion. im 19 and IMO most of the fords released since i was born were pretty crappy and the taurus definatly leads the crap-pack, but i think the older generation is thining the same thing about the maverick.

but like i said "maverick" is a cool car name anyway. most of the cars on the market today have pretty boring names anyway. what happened to the days when cars were named after wild animals, weapons, space travel themes, race tracks etc. try to excite the customer ya know?

well you cant really expect a writer for "corvette fever" magazine to have anything postive to say about a ford maverick

ironically all of my oldsmobile buddies seem to like my maverick alot more than my ch3vy powered cutlass lol

I Like that, it's oh so true!!! Also when you and your friend go to a show, how many Mustangs will be there as opposed to Mavericks? Being different is too cool!!

I dunno..... I kinda wish more magazines would trash the Maverick...Make them sound un desireable. Maybe then the prices on mav parts would not be getting so inflated so quickly. We love Todds' mav. Get lotsa looks wherever we go. Losta thumbs up. Cops pull up long side of us (mind you the car is pretty loud) smile and give the thumbs up.

What do you expect from a publication whose express purpose is to rave about import cars and trash domestics? Years ago they were caught falsifying data to make Hondas appear better than they actually were. Just the mention of the name of that rag ticks me off!:rant2:
