Hi, on my 1972 Grabber my C4 will shift at 3800 rpm, if I leave it in drive or put in frist . I just check, there is no kick down rod. I was told the C4 has a shift kit in it. I was going to check the vaccuum line today, anything elese I should check? In second gear it will hit 5800 before going into thrid. I let off in thrid at 5800 it felt good! I hope to post some pictures today. I just installed slotted rotors and Porterfield pads and shoes. I put a 1974 Maverick Manual M/C. and the supplied push rod. It stops great. Have a great Maverick Day Tony
Install the kick down linkage. It should be shifting at a minimum of 4800 in drive at wide open throttle. Most reworked valve bodies will hold in first gear until you shift it - the stock valve bodies are supposed to shift out of first (even manual low) at 4800. Ford decided that you don't need your tranny in low past that point and they won't downshift into low before a rediculously low RPM unless mods are made to the valve body. You need to have your down shift linkage set up for the shifts to be right in either case. (unless you want to manual shift all the time)
My valve body is stock, and it has never shifted out of first when in manual low. In fact, I have never heard of such a thing...
TL, If the valve body is stock it is supposed to shift out of manual low at 4800 RPM to "protect the engine from excessive RPM". Just like manually shifting into low gear at 45 or 50 MPH won't go into low gear - the transmission has the job of protecting the engine. It is not a widely publicised safeguard but it is there. If yours doesn't then it isn't stock. If you want documentation you can contact a Ford dealer or TransGo. Both have the documentation that you might want.
That is pure bullony. My C-4 since NEW has always stayed in 1st until shifted out of it. It'll pull to 6000 RPM like that (at which point I let off). I don't know what year C-4s you are referring to, or in what model cars, but your statement is not true for a 1973 Ford Maverick. Mine IS definitely stock. it shifted like that when it was original, and I then had it rebuilt to stock specs at 111,000 miles...
The C-4 has no electronics in it, and if manually put into first gear it should stay there until you shift (or break something). If it has a shift kit in it there may be damage to the valve body, and it may not be shifting completely into first. A friend of mine damaged his valve body installing his shift kit in a C-4 causing the same type of problem. You do need a kick down rod but only for automatic downshifting. Hope this helps..... good luck
I could get the proof but sometimes i just get tired of people who refuse to look up the info to see for themselves. It is easier to just call BS Look it up for yourself if you want to know.
Dude, put down the crack-pipe. I have had this car for 25 years and I know what the hell I am talking about...
Sounds like you need to check the condition of your vacuum line going to the modulator and make sure its getting vacuum to it from the intake manifold.
