I have a 76 Comet and many little electrical problems...for example when I turn on headlights, left turn signal blinks extremely sloe, about once every ten seconds, but when headlights are off, left turn signal works just fine. Also, when I use right turn signal with lights on, left break light goes out. It's always a mystery to me what lights/signals will or will not work when headlights are on or off. I put new alternator in two years ago...maybe I got the wrong one? Someone mentioned to check regulator? Any suggestions?

    Just a suggestion

Have you checked the fuses? Sometimes a simple little fuse will cause some interesting things to happen. That's where I'd start if you haven't already. Might not be a bad idea to go ahead and replace all of them under the dash. Good luck, and let us know if it helps. County Mav

Good idea...I think most fuses are probably as old as the car. Never thought of that. Hopefully it will work, otherwise back at square one. THanks!

    Get your wire brush out.

The best thing you can do is clean up every contact in the whole system. Pay particular attention to the grounds as they tend to become loose over time.

i agree with cleaning the contacts, but it sounds to me like the problem is in the left rear tail light,,, when you turn the parking lights on is it brighter or dimmer than the pass. side light? if so id deffinitly say the problem is back there,,,,

if im way off be easy on me guys/gals im not real familliar with these old cars yet, im still learning lol

Great ideas everyone. When weather permits, I will start checking grounds and contacts. Don;t know exactly how to go about it, but will ask around locally. And yes Purple70, left rear light is dimmer than right side. I recently replaced bulbs in both, but wiring must be the issue. These older cars are fun, but definitely a learning experience!

We touched on this very subject with Doug. The quote above is crucial to ALL old cars. Rust and tarnish in the grounds and electrical connections is a big enemy. A day spent tending to these can make for a different car when day is done.

ok 1 more question,, is it possible you put the bulb in backwards? that will cause it to be super bright or really dim, but it is probably a ground if the problem started before you changed them..
