Just wondering, would this work and how hard would it be?

I have a 64 Fairlane with a 289 that needs a lot of body work (floor pans mainly), and my 76 Maverick is in pretty good shape. The 76 is a 200 6cyl.

Since the 289 is the same physical size of the 302 it is a bolt in provided you have the Maverick v-8 frame mounts and motor mounts.
One problem though is the 64 - 289 will likely have a 5 bolt bellhousing which will limit your transmission choices / parts availability.

Thanks for the reply. The swap would probably be over my head anyway.

I am uneasy about the bodywork, once I got it home I realized how bad the floor pans are, and I am just not sure how to fix on my limited budget.

The Fairlane is for me, the Maverick was what my 16 year old daughter wanted. I just can not seem to get where I want to be with the Maverick. Of course, if I put a V8 in it, the Maverick would then be for me.

The Fairlane has had only 2 owners in 1 family prior to my ownership, but, it sat outside from 1999 until this October.

dont forget that the valve seats before about 1973 werent hardened to run on unleaded fuel.

igo1090 is referring to the valve-seats in the cylinder heads. There are 2 valves per cylinder... an intake valve and an exhaust valve. In around '73, the seats (where the valves are situated in the combustion chamber) were hardened to be compatible with unleaded fuel. Cylinder heads manufactured prior to '73 need to be either rebuilt, or new ones purchased in order to run on modern, unleaded fuel. To get a better idea of how the 4 stroke cycle and internal combustion engines work, there is a program out called Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia. If you know someone who has this program, it contains a narrated animation of the process. Hope this helps and best of luck with the mods/swap!

If it is a 6-bolt block your O.K. If it is a 5-Bolt block you will need a different tranny. perhaps the one that is behind it now.
    GOOD LUCK

i dont think you would need a diffrent tranny you will just have t keep the 5 bolt bell attached to the block if you decide to use a diffrent trans.

i think the 289 has the same bore and block as a 302 so it shouldnt be too hard to find late model 302 (5.0) heads that run unleaded fuel.

is there anychance the frame mounts from the fairlane will work in the mav? if so it would probably be just as easy to swap the 200 back into the fairlane, at least so its still a running car

    Don't pre-'65 289 heads have smaller valves?...

i just noticed this but it seems like your digging up old threads related to 289's. for example this one is from 2005 and i think i seen 2 other excessivly old threads youve revamped related to 289's. you probably came across these in a search but you should pay attention to the dates before you post a reply

then again i guess im not one to talk :biglaugh:

Man, what's up with the ancient post resurrections???

If you were not just repeating what had already been said, some would argue this is okay... I don't, but you haven't even added anything new in the few resurrections I have read today.:16suspect
