My dad bought a rust free '67 Cougar for $400 back in 1997 in need of cosmetic restoration. Dark green exterior, black vinyl bucket seat interior. 289/manual 3 speed on the floor. All I really remember was burning the back tires, and smokeing a new (then) 4.6 Mustang. We drove it home from Marietta, GA with no exaust and I remember that open headered 289 sounded GREAT running 70 mph around I-285!
man thats cool. How do 289's perform? are they slow or fast? Is there alot of aftermarket parts for it like the 302?
Most 302 parts fit cams, intakes, heads. The 289 have alittle shorter stroke but alittle longer rod they can be made to run good. My driver runs low 14`s spinning at 99 mph with a small cam and a 4barrel and 3.40 rearend. The 70 has got 69,351w heads ported polished and big valves,.030overbore with 10.5 to 1 comp, mild cam with 1.7rockers Edelbrock f4b intake port matched and a 750 vacum carb. 4spd trans and 4.11`s. with good tires and aggressive driving hope to see 12`s. Its all what parts you match together
I went to ask if they sell it already. No go. the guy said it was his friends and he was trying to get it painted. On the carb it had the 289 high performance decal. The dude says he crushes cars . he said he can get me a good old car for 300 bucks (probably a parts car) and he also said he can swap engines. I think Im a go to this dude for my engine swap. He was a friend of my aunt, so maybe he can help me out with the price. Probably get my engine from him too!
It all depends on what type of Mustang it is. A GT coupe, GT fastback, or a normal coupe , or fastback, and whether the 289 was a 2bbL , 4bbl, or a 289 "K" Hi-Po. As far as a 289 opposed to a 302. the 289 has a 2.87" stroke. The 302, a 3.00" stroke. The 289 will rev higher and both are the same size on the outside. RTFLDGR
I thought about putting a 289 in our mav also just to be a little different. 302's are plentiful but i found mustang fastback in a junk yard, could be hipo but doughtful still I like the thought of something a little different.
Think I'll keep it going... Back in the early 70's when we started putting V8s in Mavs we used 289s 'cause 302s were still fairly new and not in junk yards. I ran a 289 in mine for about 15 years.
Lots of times new engines are not liked. Even the 350 went threw this,,, 327 an 283 guys just couldn`t get use to a 350!
