if i put a v8 where a 6 cyl is now do i need to get new tranny? what other things will i need to replace? is it gonna cost me big $$$? the car is 1970 mav by the way.
you'll need the v-8 belly bar, a dual tranny mount, of course the v-8 and motor mounts. also the v-8 frame mounts. if it's a c-4 you will need to change the flex plate and bellhousing. and you'll probably need to get the tranny rebuilt with some better parts as the 6 trannys were weaker. if you change the tranny make sure you count the input splines. in 1970 they changed from 24 to 26 spline. this will determine the torque convertor. some will say you don't need the belly bar or the dual tranny mount but they did come with the v-8's. you may or may not have to get a throttle linkage. also you are going to need some type of exhaust system. i'm sure others will correct me if i'm wrong or add something if i left it off.as an after thought you might need to change out the radiator to a 3 core.
well a rebuilt trans is probably $400-600 ish and a running low miles 302 could easily be $500-$1000. at that point you have to ask your self what kind of upgrades you would want to invest in. headers are like $300ish new i believe plus the rest of the exhaust. frame mounts are $100 new and probably another $20 for the motor mounts. and i think the belly bar is $170 new. so im sure you can see how quickly it add up. alot of the swap parts could be found in a v8 mav at a junk yard for cheaper though
