Ok, I have searched quite a bit. Maybe one of you guys can help me. I am rebuilding the front end on my '72 and am finished with the driver's side. The idler arm is being a pain. I removed it, pressed out the old bushing in the center link and replaced it. The actual idler arm end that connects to the frame side has a grease zert and the center does not want to come out. AZ sent me a bushing for it, but it looks longer than the old one. Is that part sealed, or can I pull it out and replace it? Thanks
Strange. My Autocrafters catalog is showing my idler arm as a 73+ version. I think i will look into getting a new one later.
Yes, the bushing is serviceable. I got a repalcement from NAPA. IIRC the new one was a little bit longer but fit, I just figured at the time that the old one was so beat up and worn that it didn't look like the new one anymore. How much difference between your old and new ones?
I rebuilt my front end about a year ago, and had similar problems. I ended up getting 3 different idler arm bushing from three different parts stores all claiming to be the replacement part for my 71 Comet. I think I ended up with the one from Autozone as it was the right length but just a little too wide. I it to a machine shop owned by a friend of mine where we put it in a lathe and machined it down to where it fit very snug in the housing. If your going to try this you need to use a bolt passed through the center with a large washer on either side and tighten it just enough to hold it but not compress the rubber then lock the end of the bolt into to the lathe.
