what are you rewiring and how long of wire run is it. Do you know the amp draw of the components you are rewiring?
I am rewiring the back end. Tail, brake, side markers and plate lights. The run would be about 10 feet to the fuse box. Does anyone know the original gauge of the wire? Does anyone know if I can still buy a full wire harness for the front and back? Thanks
Most of the rear wiring in these cars is 18 ga. There is usually no more than an amp or 2 going through them.
Thank you...... You are an invaluable resource. I hope you will be around in the spring when I change the engine. LOL
I agree with Dennis. 18 gauge is pretty much standard for that kind of wiring. Always be careful not to use smaller gauge than you need. It can be a disaster waiting to happen if the wiring heats up due to it being too small gauge. Also, try to stay away from crimp on connectors in areas which may see moisture. They corrode and cause you problems down the road. The best way to replace wires is the old way with solder. A good hot solder joint won't corrode, holds as firm as it gets, and keeps resistance down to make a perfect splice all the time.
if this helps, here is a little more info.. Fusible Links I.D.: Red-18 gauge Orange-16 gauge Green-14 gauge If you car is like mine, all the wires are the same color......dirty brownish!
