Yes, in some states you do. It's like the property tax you pay on land you own. A privilege tax for being able to drive.

    Good for you. :yahoo:

I lived in South Carolina for a short time and my jaw hit the floor when I got the tax bill for my three cars. It was almost $600/year. :( That was for the white Comet seen below, a 4 year old Mercury Cougar, and a 8 year old Jaguar XJ

Thats exactly why I wont move to NC even though my daughter lives there. Va is the same way. Personal property taxes suck!!! My other daughter lives in AL so thats where I will eventually be.

In 'Bama, it's based on the value of the car. The older the car, the less the tax, no matter if you have a $500,000 show car, the tax is based on the when sold new price, and then goes down each year with the lower value of the car. A new car starts out about $300 or so and drops from there. They do not count any improvements over the original vehicle cost, nor any improvements on a worn out vehicle. I think it's called an ad valorem tax.

It will probably cost them more than $1.64 to process the check.

Each vehicle has to be taxed as property. Whether it drives or not is unimportant.
I still pay on my Jeep and I haven't driven it in a year.
