Hey ya all!!! Just wondering what kind of (if some special) oil I should use to my powersteering, lifted the dipstick and it´s dry like a bad hangover and rusted all the way... Trying to make something beautiful, beautiful again...
i just go to auto zone or pep boys and get some power steering fluid. do they have any stores like that there or is there any chain auto parts stores?
We got like two majorand all of theese small enthuisiast places, I just don´t want to buy the wrong stuff, is there something else than just "power steering fluid", any codes or qualities (stuff like that), I know it´s lame questions but I want it "real"... Thanks!!!
You don't want power steering fluid. You want automatic transmission fluid. It would be the red stuff. Some power steering fluid is clear and you don't want that.
Rode's Restorations is well know for rebuilding power steering components. http://www.rodesrestoration.com/ From their website (after you install rebuilt componenets): Start vehicle with front tires off the pavement (eight seconds is the normal cycle time). Add 1½ quarts of NAPA 75-205 or Ford type "F" or "FA" transmission fluid, and then actuate the system. The normal operating temperature is 140F (can go to 170F on a hot day). They are the experts.
Also on their website: MUST USE FORD TYPE F OR FA AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID RECOMMENDED FLUID -- NAPA 75-205 Rode's guarantees our work for one year of normal use with Ford type F or FA transmission fluid (or NAPA Fluid 75-205). If the wrong fluid or Teflon tape is used, Rode's is not responsible for any leakage that might occur.
Agree here Type F is a superior fluid,,,plus what Ford recommended for it! Always check manufacture for correct fluid! They got the smarts for this,,plus, part was designed for a certain fluid
I used type F pack in the 70s' and 80's on my first maverick, that is what I was always told to use....think it is also listed in the chilton manual. Robert
He should throw a bottle of LUCAS in it as well to keep it from leaking out over nite.Yes definitely trans fluid in that beast, not power steering fluid.
I put in my Mav's power steering fluid in first time. After some time it need more. Then I do'nt have steering fluid and put typeF fluid. Then it takes two season that this mix(or 30+ years) eat rubber pressure hoses. I find this out in the middle of the parking place. Now I have new hoses and type F fluid.
I guess my questions are not all that stupid when I read all your posts... You are all so great!!! Thanks!
