I have a '71 Maverick Grabber, my vin number is 12 digits long. If I'm not mistaken, most are eleven digits long.....1K691F232700. Can anyone tell me why?
Where your 3rd and 4th numbers is 69, it should be 93 for a grabber. Only other number would be a 91 for standard Maverick or a 92 for a 4 door.
I'd be willing to bet that you're looking at a title or registration card, not the VIN number on the serial number plate on the left hand side of the dash through the window. State departments of motor vehicles make mistakes with serial numbers all the time, but it would be really unusual for the factory to attach an incorrect VIN plate. It looks like someone at some point just added a 6 by mistake to your number in some paperwork submitted to the DMV. If you take the 6 out, then you have: 1 = 1971 K = Assembled in Kansas City 91 = Standard 2-door Maverick F = 302-2V V8 232700 = consecutive unit number Only the 6 seems out of place. And it means the car was a standard 2-door, not a Grabber.
I agree, I bet the 6 was a mistake. Look at the VIN on the dash or on the sticker in the door jam. I am willing to bet your VIN is 1K91F232700, making it a '71 NON Grabber factory 302 car, built at the Kansas City plant.
