OK, While at the track I blew a head gasket so now I have my engine all torn apart "and you know what that can lead to". When my #1 cylinder is up on the compression stroke should'nt the timing mark be lined up on Zero or TDC? it's about a half inch off what am I missing here? I plan on getting new heads to replace my current set of ported D20E Iron castings.
sometimes the balancer outer ring can slip. Could be your problem. Also, sometimes the timing "pointer" can be the wrong one for your engine. Been there done that. I'd suspect that the balancer has slipped, though. Pretty common.
If the heads are off and piston and rod on #1 are intact, you can bolt a solid bar or the like, with a drilled and tapped hole in the center for a bolt to screw into about 1/2inch out the bottom of the bar. Rotate the engine by hand clockwise until the piston stops(gently) against the bolt, mark the dampner. Then rotate counterclockwise until it stops against the bolt again. mark the dampner again. Half way between the two marks is TDC, should line up with 0 or tdc on the dampner. If you have access to a dial indicator and degree wheel, you basically do the same thing but it is more accurate. Did the engine leak water into #! cyl? Could have bent the rod but not a 1/2in. Probably the dampner rubber bonded ring has slipped.
The gasket blew between the #5 an #6 cylinder and to be honest I never knew it till I after I got home. It still ran and sounded great at the track just no power I thought I had a fuel issue. I slapped a bar across the cylinder and made a new mark for TDC and it's 2 1/4" off. So do I need a new balancer? and if so any suggestions
Yes,If you were running a stock one,you can get another.I would recommend a good SFI spec aftermarket damper.Fluid damper/Rattler something along those lines if you drag race it often.
That would explain some of the issues at the r-up with it when we put more timing into it. Yes you need a new balancer. I have a pioneer sfi that seems nice and it was reasonably priced. Can get you a sight to order them if interested.
Well,,,, best get a puller an installer! To install, just get a longer bolt an oversize nuts, washers or spacers to pull it back on. NEVER beat dampner off! Very hard on it, crank, bearings an knuckles! If all else fails,,,,follow the other thread an shoot it off,,,just kidding
when using a puller make sure not to damage the end the crank because you are gonna need it and the threads inside. when installing do not pull the dampener on with the bolt that is why they make an installer. be careful not to bottom out the installer . by the way all these guys have given you great advice. I love this forum!
