Mine is sand on a slope. I have access to an open carport that is perfect. I will have to see what happens when I get my tax handout in February.

Have you ever put headers on a V-8 Maverick/Comet?? Get lots of rest the day before, takes lots of deep breaths, and enjoy. It'll be one of those things you'll never forget! I almost got divorced before I was married, just ask my wife :)

I'm going to have to dissagree with you a bit here.

    A few years back i took a dead stock 460 for with 8.2:1 comp,put a performer rpm cam and intake,3000 convertor,700 holley,4.11 gears.Put it in my 1964 mercury pick up (4000 lbs].
Before the parts swap the stock 460 pushed it to 14.92 at 81mph
After the parts it went 13.30 at 99 mph.

i'm sure with a couple more points in compression it would have gone alot quicker, but there is power to be had even with low compression engines.

I guess then you ignored the second sentence of that post. The part about choosing the cam wisely;) Pick the wrong cam and you'll end up with a poorly performing engine with a cam that's meant for higher compression ratios, one that has big overlap to bleed off the cylinder pressure at low rpms, but improves the scavenging at hgiher rpms. Seen it happen many times with guys who just want that "big cam" sound :hmmm:and fail to do the homework in choosing the right cam. The static ratio is one of the most important factors in choosing a cam. Your gear change had more to do with the second & a half lower E.T. than the cam did.

Ohh i agree.Alot of guys just want big cam numbers, and have that car show idle, but then don't understand why they have a poor performing vehicle. And yes i did my homework when i chose that cam and it was actually a little large for my combination at the time(i had some upgades planned the next season).I just don't want to see someone get discourged and not do a small cam upgrade because they are led to belive that it will not make any improvement.Sometimes the cash flow just isn't there to build a fresh engine with more compression and you just have to work with what you have.

not "big" power, but "good" power *can* be made by adding a cam especially with 4bbl and headers. the compression just means you stick with 87 octain. lsa will affect static compression somewhat too.
crane cams energizer has a good cam for you. http://www.cranecams.com/?show=browseParts&lvl=2&prt=5&Vehicle_Type=Auto&Cylinders=8&Engine_Make=FORD-MERCURY&Year=1975&Engine_Size=221-302%20C.I.&partNumber=130032&partType=camshaft
or, since you will have exhaust and intake off, might buy a set of head gaskets, yank you head and shave it .010 and stick em back on then put in this cam..
    http://www.cranecams.com/?show=brow...-302 C.I.&partNumber=130042&partType=camshaft (just a thought)

its all about getting gas in and getting it out right? so you wont be able to run as much timing due to lower octain, BUT you can still move fuel (to a certain extent).
i run the edelbrock performer in my gmc before and it made lots of low end grunt...same lift as this one, alittle different timing and whatnot. this is setup for your engine. id trow it in while youve got it all broke down.
i used to own a 71 ford p/u with a 302. all i did was drop a 4bbl, not even headers...just an intake and carter afb. the truck would tach 6 grand in a heartbeat afterwards. headers would have helped and deffinately a cam. just order your cam to target low comp and a certain rpm range, and headers to match said rpm range and dont over carb it, and itll suprise ya. follow the formula for carb matching and youll be gtg.

A 71 302 would have been better than a 73 model as far as compression goes. It would have had a point more at 9 to 1. 72 was when Ford replaced the 9 to 1 pistons with the "Grand Canyon" model 8 to 1 pistons.

i am fully aware of this guy. i was only stating that i did a carb swap and noticed a hella change. even on 8:1, youll still move air in and out with a cam/carb/matched header swap. maybe gain up too 40-60 hp. hell, drop an aluminum intake on it while you are there. dime a dozen and can only help. im sure someone has one or 2 lying around on this board.
    =)
