Im thinking about alternitives to my stock 2bbl carb on my 302 in a 73 comet... EFI has come up i was just wonder if some one could tell me how hard it is and all the parts i would need. I can pretty much do anything under the hood its just the wiring that scares me
easiest way is to find an EFI 302, either a mustang, cougar, t-bird, etc (ideally a '89-up Mustang would be the way to go) and rob the upper/lower manifolds, ECM and entire engine wiring harness. Also get the fuel pump cut relay and make sure you write down what color wires go back to the fuel pump. The more info you get before you remove parts, the easier the swap. It's very easy, in fact I think it's actually easier than tuning a carburetor. With EFI, you just install it, plug the connectors in to the right places, and off you go. You will have to install a high-pressure fuel pump and plumb it to the front of the car. That's the hardest part IMO.
I"ve got an upper and lower EFI intake and fuel rail/injectors off of a 90 mustang if you are interested.
hmm ok so my best be its go find a mustang 5.0 86 or up thats been in a wreck and the engines not damaged
I would be but i need every thing i would need to do the change over.. otherwise it going to be insane and very costly to find each individual part
You need the following; In line fuel pump from an 85-87 PU. Run feed and return lines to the tank. Fuel filter. Modify the tank for pick up and return. Move the battery to the trunk for right facing intake use. Larger battery capacity. Heddom headers, new head pipes and ox sensors. 50 oz balance flywheel to go against the C4 auto. Special trans kick down lever. Convert to internal regulated alternator. Fab new firewall to spring tower braces. Wire and dozens of little issues to solve. Learning about what you are working with before you start or nightmare is apt to occurr before your done. Note, if doing a 302, the injector fire order has to be changed and a distributor has to be made up from parts from both because the 5L dist has a longer shaft and won't set into a 302.
Bluegrass scares me. That information was pretty much...uh...er.. uhm.. to the point. Hell, I've GOT EFI and feel like I'd better change to carb! Good post, Bluegrasss.
In reply to Craig, yes, I have used the name for the passed three years on other boards. When this board lost my ID I reregistered with the new name. Nice to be a newbie after about 6 years on this board. I don't visit that much any more being taken up with moderator duties on a Lincoln board and others. I'm well into EFI and modified motors running a blown speed density setup and coming this season a Ford powered sprint car.
