Ok, i was talking to a friend and it so happens that he has an old granny car (think it was a montego, or something) and had a 351w in it it runs he wanted 100 bucks for it so i bought it ive heard all your storys of your engine swaps i would just like to know will my 302 mounts work and do i have to do any mods before i put it in and will my 302 auto tranny work and most of all is it worth the work to change a 302 to a 351
Great score! I've never personally seen a Montego, I guess they're pretty rare in these parts. Anyway, the 351w is basically an overgrown 302. Pretty much everything interchanges except oil pan, intake manifold and headers are usually different (since the windsor is taller.) Other than that, it's basically a bolt-in deal, but if it were me (and the 351 runs) I'd use the 351. They make a LOT more bottom end torque for a heavy car like that.
Won't fit.... ...without shock tower modifications. The 351W is taller and wider than the 289/302 mills. You can cut the shock towers and then it is pretty much a bolt swap. Do an archive search on 351 swap and you will find lots of info. Seth
Alright well sound like i got a engine swap coming up... i dont know what the montego is i personaly havent seen it....i guess the car is his gandmas and she past away sometime ago and there clearing out her stuff to sell her house, and he brought up a grannys car thats got a 351w it was running good but hasnet been ran in about a year and its got four flat tires so i havent picked it up yet he said i got it to run tho
the 351w will fit without any modifications to the shock towers, but you'll have a heck of a time changing sparkplugs. i pulled my 351w out and put in a 302 and am a lot happier. i race in the street class at the local tracks and can't go faster than 12.00 so i'm good with the 302. if you want fast, the 351w can be stroked for a lot of power.
won't need to pull the engine to change the plugs, but i would not let any small children to stand nearby unles you don't care that they hear a lot of cussin. you won't get a ratchet in. you'll need a spark plug socket that you can get an open ond wrench on.
I dont have a problem changing MY plugs...just gotta use the plug socket on 2 of em with a wrench on the hex end of the socket...and an old plug boot ta start em back..no problem..it really is a piece of cake
