Well i guess i dont feel so bad, 12000.00 and more to do, Like some have said it keeps me out of trouble,
i have about $15,000 in my 71 grabber but i have been offered $18,000 for it. i laughed and turned him down but it does make me feel a little better knowing someone is willing to pay that kind of money for a maverick.
No one should expect to get anywhere near what they spend to restore or resto-mod a Maverick back. They are not an investment, even the rarest examples. Money might be made by finding one cheap, cleaning it up and selling it on eBay BEFORE it's restored, but not after. With the cost of parts and any farmed out labor today, a really nice show-worthy car will no doubt cost over $15,000 to build, and that's doing the majority of the work yourself. I had over $15,000 in the red 70 Maverick that was featured in Mustang & Fords magazine in May 2000, and that was eight years ago. I've got over $6000 in the 4-door "Interceptor" I have now, and other than body work, paint and a few minor mods, it's virtually stock. The prices of Mavericks are increasing, but if you want a nice, show-quality car, no matter what you spend, it'll be worth less than you spent, usually alot less. Do it because you enjoy it, not because you plan to get your money back!
Like some of the guys have said, don't worry about the money...just enjoy the car. I've made money on several of the Mavericks I have sold in the past but it's simply because I did like Chuck said...I bought cheap...and it can be done. If you want to make investments, dig deep, and start looking at big block muscle cars. At least that seems to be where the market is for now. No telling what might happen over the next five years though. Mavericks might just get crazy!
I am Hoping I can just talk Ray into doing One Maverick for me,, just because he would like to do some extra painting and rust work,,, . If I could get Mavaholic to just do the rust work on my 71 comet because he is good at it and loves messing with rust work,, That would be way cool. If I could get Dan Starnes to just trade Stallions with me,,, That would be the topping on the cake,,, And if they all just said Hey,, a good dinner at Hooters,, would be payment enough,,, I would be just waking up to the smell of that first Cup of coffee,,, and realize that was a way Cool Dream,,,
Remember, Guys. Scott has given up the boxed wine, his favorite port. That alone will make him gooder at porting. Love ya, Scott.
I think it is all relative ... my Comet was my daily driver for 6 years. Think about what car payments for a new car are and it takes the sting out a little. I have now had the car for 15 years and figured out that I had $10K in it at about the 10 year mark. $1000/year ... not too bad. On the other hand ... I have recently come to terms with the thought that if it will ever be "done" (again?), I will need to do pretty much everything. This means learning to weld (my next goal), doing upholstery (thank god for kits), and learning to paint a car (I have had a lot of practice airbrushing, so we'll just ramp up the scale of things). Good thing I don't feel any time pressure...
