Hey guys. I have a '73 Comet GT. It's automatic, and its been switched from a column to a floor shifter. I've got a new job lined up in May that I decided the first thing I wanna do is put a 3-speed in the Comet. Does anyone have ANY clue on about how much i'd be looking at with mechanic cost and everything? I just want some kind of an estimate.. Thanks guys!

Not sure about labor ... but I have a Maverick 3-Speed sitting here in Georgia with all the correct linkage, bell housing and spacer plate for cheap. All you would need to get with for is a clutch kit and shift handle ... actually ... the tranny is about to go in the dumpster after I remove the shifter linkage and bellhousing. I am having a new roof and siding put on my house so I am doing some cleaning out as well since the big dumpster is sitting in my driveway.

Pretty easy Swap .... If you had all the parts I'd do it in my driveway for $400 :) I have experience ... my Grabber was an Automatic when I got it ...

Keep in mind besides the tranny you need the clutch pedal assembly and all the mechanical linkage for the clutch.

not a bad price at all. how much to put my dash, windsheild, and rearend back in and finish rebuiling the motor on mine? $400.00 and we got a deal:rolleyes:especially if thats parts and labor.:D but really that is a great price, might even be worth driving down here for.

....I bet a mechanic would charge closer to $1000.

I wish i lived closer to GA. I'd definatly have you do it for me! I'm all the way up in OHIO so that would be quite the haul. I could probably find someone around here that is good with this kind of thing that would do it for cheap.

So how much would i be looking at in parts?

Find a place that works on street rods, they do these kinds of swaps all the time.

My girlfriends dad was a mechanic for years, i'm going to talk to him about doing it and i can help him and learn. I'm really curious how much the parts will cost, and where i can go about getting them..

When you peice meal it together ... it gets expensive. Figure $300 for clutch kit. FIgure $200 for nice set of pedals. FIgure $300 for z-bar and mounts ( if you can find them). Figure $200 for a new flywheel... PLus miscellanous mounts, bushings, etc ... of course you need the entire tranny setup with linkage, shifter, bellhousing, clutch fork, etc ...

Find a rusted out parts car that was originally a 3-speed is the way to go ... or maybe somebody that just swapped their manual car to an automatic.

Here is the complete list of parts for a swap to make it just like factory ...

    Here is a list:

    Clutch Pedal
    Clutch Pedal Pad
    Brake Pedal
    Brake Pedal Pad
    Pedal Bushings
    Clutch assist spring & bracket
Rod from pedal to equalizer bar
    Clutch rod boot at firewall
    Clutch equalizer bar (Z bar)
    Frame side Z bar bracket
    Engine side Z bar bracket
Bracket bushings, C clips and felts
Rod from Z bar to clutch fork
    Z bar springs
    Bell housing
    Engine block plate
    Pilot bushing
    Flywheel
    Clutch disc
    Pressure plate
    throw-out bearing
    Clutch fork
    Clutch fork pivot
    Bell housing boot)
    Transmission
    Shifter
    Upper shift boot and bezel
    Speedometer Cable and Gear

you would be better off with the automatic or a 4 speed.. the 3 speed really is a step backwards IMO

For originality (and cost) I can see a 3-speed swap if you'd rather drive a stick .... a 4-speed is definitely nicer but will add another $700+ to the price ...

For that much trouble/money,I'd go to a T5 5speed,change over to a cable type clutch.A stick PLUS overdrive.:thumbs2:

    I agree with that

    3 speeds aren't cool
