Well, I am done for the day. Got a late start waiting for my dad to show up to help, then 924 Mav showed up to pick up the old block and we talked cars and jet skis for a good hour . After he left, I put in the radiator and wired up the alternator, and just noticed that my arms were getting heavy, so I figured 6pm was late enough for one day. All I have left is fill it with water, trans fluid, and put a couple of wires on the coil, prime the oil system and ready to start it up.
Scott No wander you had a hard time lineing up everything you useing mustang fender cover on your maverick. JAY
Couldn't find any MAVERICK fender covers...sorry I guess I could have at least turned them upside-down for the photo...
Not running yet... Sounds like a timing issue. I must not have gotten the dizzy back in straight after I primed the oiling system. Starts for a second then pops and fire out the carb... BUT!!! No weird metal to metal clanking sounds, no grinding, and fuel pressure seems to be good while it is turning over by key (somewhere above 20psi) So far, sounds much quieter than my last engine. Sounds like it has a completely different exhaust setup Maybe I just didn't run the dual flowmasters long enough to get used to them... Oh, and I can definitely tell that it is higher compression than before. The old batter has been charging to full, but is struggling to turn this motor over...so I will probably have to hit Wally World for a new battery. Can't complain, they put this battery in right after Della passed away, and then kept it at the ranch for over a year without running it until I got it, then I have run it almost 6 years on the same battery...
fyi, poor timing can make it turn over hard. Maybe once that is sorted the battery won't be a problem after all.
My old battery was 7 years old, so I swapped it in for a new one with 750 cold cranking amps (rather than the 600 the old one had). I can still tell that it is taking a bit more "crank" to roll this motor over, though... Got the timing at 10 degrees without the advance vacuum hooked up. That worked on the old motor, but might be too much for this one. Seems fine at idle and revving in the garage.
