My mother is selling this old lady's house, she is 89 yrs old and she had a 74 Maverick sitting in an outside carport...Its got 68,00 miles.i got it for 200 bucks!..One small dent on the passenger side..70's green..a small pait spill on the hood..a lil paint removed from the passengers side..the interior is very nice no rips or holes, except the drivers inside door handle is gone..everything is in tact except for some minor issues...I had it toed because it hasnt been started for years..one tire was flat, the battery is dead .... The tires need to be replaced but the hubcaps are nice but the rims are very rusted...there is cracking in the plastic that attaches the bumper.. by the way, im in florida, so there is NO rust on the body. i plan on cleaning it up, VERY DIRTY.i m going to manually try to turn the engine over and see what happens ..then changing the oil, fluids, and stabilizing the gas tank and so forth.. this is my 1st car project, i figure this V6 shouldnt give me too much troubles.. any advice would be great!...I plan on taking pics of it later tonight and posting em...
well if it has been sitting for a while one of the first things i would look for is a rusty tank. i found this to be my biggest problem. engines dont seem to want to run when there is about a 1/4 inch worth of rust in the bottom of the tank. when your going through and changing the fluids i would change plugs, wires, dis. cap, rotor, condenser. and maybe points if you feel like fighting with them. if your looking for resto parts i would check these people out... http://www.autokrafters.com/mainframe.html they dont have everything but they have alot. if you have any questions just ask your garunteed an answer from some one on the board. there are alot of guys on here that know their stuff! i would say i do but that would be a lie im only 17 and still have tons to learn. have fun, robc
you have the 170 ci V6 (two short valve covers) or do you have an inline six (one long valve cover) ?
V6? wow, if it is a v6 it would have to be and "custom" job, right(elliot)? hey, where in florida? MCCI has a rep there and I have a sister/family in orlando area..... sounds like a cool first project:bananaman ......Robert ps. if you can, try to keep the original paint the green metallic has some cool swirls in it. pics always wanted
no not realy ford made a 170 ci V6 (I`d love to have one of them) and some of them got put in the mavericks but I have yet to see one in a mav
no I`m not thinking of that one (not that I think much any way ) and I know that the 170 I6 was the standard engin in the early mavericks, I`ve heard of V6s in mavericks and saw a v6 that was pulled out of a maverick but I still havent seen a V6 in a mav .
V6. I have never seen a V6 in a Maverick/Comet. To my knowledge they never came with them. 170 cid, 200 cid, and 250 cid inline 6 cyl. came in them. and 302 (5.0) V8's were it. I had a '74 Mustang II with the V6. It was 2800 cc's I believe but that was supposedly a rare engine that was of foreign design. So, I agree with Craig. Seth
While no mavs came with a V-6, the 2800 (2.8L) littleredtoy mentioned was not a rare engine at all. It came in the Mustang II, Capri, Pinto wagons, early fox body Mustangs, 83-85 rangers, and all 84-85 Bronco II's. It was built in Cologne, Germany and is the base design used for the 2.9L(86-92) and the 4.0L OHV(90-00).
thanks for the feed it is a 6 cylinder...This will be my 1st project...Im in Tampa..Not sure what you were saying by MCCI, but i work for MCI? ... After getting it home and assesing it, I have found a rust spot on the passenger door about a quater size on the far right corner..It seems they were hauling a trailer, because they have welded to the chasis, so its a lil harder to get to the gas tank. But it does not appear to be rusted...it does have cosmetic work...its got its original paint job...I need door handles? for both sides. the rims and tires need replacing..I plan on changing the oil and draining the radiator tomorrw and trying to stabilize the gas tank..Ive been charging the battery and it is showing life, but im going to replace that also... I personally know very little about cars...im not going to lie.. i think im just going to use it to run errands and so forth and drive to work and try to save miles on my car... the paint has been lost in a few places...its the original paint so im not sure if this can be touched up or not... there also seems to be an oil leak somewhere, (i am seeing oil reminants inside the engine..But i havent been able to do much yet considering i work full time and its been raining over here..but hopefully i'll get the thing working... my camera is broken, so i will have pictures hopefully soon..Thanks again fellas..!!!
but i got to say the interior looks beautiful ... i need to clean it up a lil bit but it is in perfect condition..
welllll, i got it started...I changed the oil, stabilized the gas tank, and drained the radiator...I had to replace the ignition cables...the condenser was fine and the points looked good...i also had to replace some of the fuel line...im just waiting on my brother to bring a timing light over so i can adjust the timing on it...i need to tighten up the belts too...But it starts with no hesitation now...LOL..i know most of you will hate me when i saw this, but i was given some 13" daytons, but they wouldnt fit ...they fit on the back, but the front brake was in the way, i tried spacers and it didnt work also...so well keep those in the garage for another project...well once i get this thing running at its specs imma start working on the cosmetic needs..photos coming soon!.
