    Marti Report

Comet King. To my knowledge, I am the only person attempting to keep a registry on '71-'75 Comet GT's. I have a couple of entries of factory equipped 6 cyl. GT's, but nobody has ever submitted a copy of a Marti Report with a 6 cyl. GT, but even if I had one, it wouldn't answer your question.
The GT package was a trim level option on Comets. Thus, Marti picks it up as an option group, not as a separate model like Grabber Mavericks likely do.?????? Can anyone confirm this?

I have a copy of a Marti Report for a member's 1971 Comet GT. There were 13,677 Comets with the 'GT Appearamce Group' built for the '71 model year.
There were 16,119 Comets built with 302 2V's and C4 automatic trannies-which the subject car has.

Do you see where I am going with this? The Marti report for a 6 cyl. would give the number of 6 cyl. Comets produced, not just GT's with 6 bangers.

Kevin Marti I am sure would run the stats for a fee to tell you how many GT's came with 6 cyl. power. But a standard Marti Report will not answer the question. I would guess that 6 cyl. cars are somewhere between 10-20% of total GT production, but that is only a guess.

Good luck. I would like to add your car to the GT Registry. Can you e-mail me pics and descriptions?

    Thanks,

By the way, your interior should be black deluxe woven vinyl, buckets of course as all GT's had, and the exterior paint should be medium yellow gold. Your rear gears should be 2.79. DSO was Los Angeles. 200 6cyl mated to a C4 automatic.

Seth, in your registry, do you differentiate between those that have proof of a GT to those that claim one is?

I know there are visual signs but no proof without documentation, is this correct?

    clones

I have rejected a couple of inaccurate clones, and I have one correct clone that the owner admitted was a reproduction identified as such.

One would think so, but you can almost look at the pictures and tell the car has been repainted

Speaking of cars that don't exist. How about a 68 Torino fastback with a 289. Ford says they did not put a 289 in 68 Torinos. (302s) My dad's friend bought it new it is still all original. Must be a 67 holdover.

From what I understand, 302 was the 'official' engine for 68, but a shortage of 302 blocks took place, and the blocks/engines were used interchangably for a bit.
They say you can find 289 cubes in 302 marked blocks, and vise-versa... as well as 67 289 leftovers as 'stand-ins'.

Btw, did you measure the stroke on the block to make sure it was 289 cubes?
What exactly told the owner it was for sure a 289?

Could be a 289 block'd 302. That is most common variation.

Seth, I registered mine and sent you the Marti Report copy a while back. If you don't have it let me know and I'll send it again. Mine's a 71 GT with factory six. Here's a small copy from my Cardomain site. - Matt Weaver

I believe when most people say "stock to the bone" they are referring to the drive train. It's obvious the car has been repainted and he even acknowledges that in his question/answers. The car does look stock to me but is no way 100% original/unrestored. There is a big difference.

I have run into several 1968 Fords of different style that have 289's in them. Torino's as well. I always thought it was 67 leftover stuff. Very interesting.
