Both my '67 Galaxies have 390s,one is a Z code manual trans car.Other is just a 2bbl/c6 but it's got an Edelbrock Streetmaster/holley 600 on it now.I'd take a worn out 390 over it's replacement(351m/400)anyday.
Yup, I know the first digit in the VIN is the model year. I guess I was just focused on the engine digit, since at the time this was what I thought was possibly the most valuable and savable thing on the car. S-code and X-code 390s are quite popular in Cougar circles too (390s available in '67-'69). I didn't realize there was that much aftermarket stuff available for them--good news for folks building them. But compared to their contemporary competition, the 390's just were not standouts (i.e."forgotten"), and IMO, today don't have the benefits of buildadability/economy that SBFs do, nor the raw power/wow factor of 428CJs. Thats it, still a great mill, but for me, not as desirable as the 'littler' or 'bigger' stock offerings.
I'm sorry if i offend anyone but in my experience a stock 351w is a mutt compared to a 390.We have a 390 in our 67 Cougar and in stock form just timing a carb tuning has run 13.90.No dead stock 351w is going to do that.
Nice 60's trucks. I'll look for pictures of mine and post. We never did paint the thing. I agree, bone stock 351w vs 390 FE... Id pick a 390 any day of the week.
The Color is Prowler orange but it gose red in different lighting....So i guess your right Orange/red? Inbetween
what to look out for? BTW, what should I keep a lookout for if I stumble across a Mav or Comet in a boneyard?? I was drawn to the skinny bumpers since I figured these were sought after. I figure slotted mags would be high on the list too? Are they any particular parts that are rare and or desirable? Even if I don't own one of these honeys at the time, I would like to pass the info onto folks here who can used the stuff. Thx.
I have a 428 SCJ in my 1969 Cougar XR7. Very torquey engine, very nose heavy too, compared to a small block. The FE engine is still popular. I think that is partially why there is an aftermarket parts source. Blocks, cylinder heads and crankshafts are all available aftermarket. Genesis is doing blocks, 427's I think, Carroll Shelby has his name on aluminum cylinder heads. Edelbrock also make aluminum cylinder heads.
Consolette, manual transmission pedals, bucket seat and floor shift parts, and steering columns without shift linkage for same floor shifters. Grabber hoods, Comet GT hood scoops, V8 conversion parts, sport mirrors. Rust free sheetmetal, front and rear valances for small bumpers. That is all that I can think of off the top of my head.
