need advice.I have a 351m and think of putting it in a 75 4 dr maverick.has anyone done this and if so how much trouble is it.
not sure on the 351M, but I don't think there's much aftermarket parts for that motor. you'll need headers specific to the maverick probably. And probably need to modify the shock towers.
If you do an M block I would LOVE to see it. I also think your goin into uncharted waters. Although my friend has a 60-somethin rachero with an M block in it. Who knows what he did to make it work. Same sort of front end.
I think the discussion has been held before.. Do not quote me.. but i think the M motor is too wide to go in.. the 351w fits fine, and you can stroke it out to be a bad@$$ motor
M = Modified. Some people will say it mean Midland but I think it is Modified. Its a modified Cleavland kinda. And in my opinion is more or less a truck motor. They way they were designed produces a lot of torque and work well in old f-series (like my truck ). But I have heard they have problems with oiling and such. Mine works so I leave it alone.
There was a pretty long thread about it on here not very long ago. Can't seem to find it now though. Honestly, you're better off with a 302 or something.
351M--- M stands for Modified Cleveland, which is misleading, it's actually a destroked 400. And it will not fit between the shock towers. It's as wide as a 460. It uses it's own unique motor mounts. The only thing it's good for is stroking back to a 400. Even then, it takes mucho money to correct the factory pistons shortfall---at TDC they're 1/6" short of the deck. No quench at all. Build it with 9.5 to 1 compression and it'll want nothing but premuim fuel to control the detonation. It can be made to run after stroking, but it'll cost more in every aspect to do.
you might want to take a look at this article http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2001/11/351M/ as they state on what the m stands for I always understood it as modified but this is what they say "Finally, what exactly does "M" stand for? Ford says it has no official meaning. Some think it means "modified" -due to the new 351 being modified from the 400. Others think it signifies the Michigan foundry where the block was cast, however the 400 and 351M were cast at both the Michigan (code MCC) and Cleveland (CF) plants. The casting codes can be found at the rear of the block, behind the intake seal ridge" as for lack of high performance parts you can use allot of Cleavland parts but then you have to ask the question do yo want to try to cut it to fit, go to a mustang II front end or find a windsor block V8. I.E. 289,302, 351w ect.
