so im taking my maverick through DMV inspections tomorrow morning, with the I6 still in place so i can renew the tags and get antique plates so it never has to be inspected again. once its home the engine's comming out im taking the engine and trans out as a package but once its out i want to be able to pull the trans off of the engine. should i lay under the car and disconnect the TQ converter from the fly wheel but leave the bell bolted to the block so that they come out together? or would it be easier to pull the 2 apart when its out? if i left them together and then pulled the trans off then the converter would still be stuck to the engine and i'd have a mess of fluid right? look foward to some input on this one, thanks
I usually get under there and unbolt the converter first, if I'm planning on separating them. It's much easier than making a mess
You've got the right idea. Undo the converter and then take the engine/trans out as a unit. If you leave the convert on when you pull the trans loose, it's probably going to make a mess. Just be careful, because the converter can slide out of the trans extremely easy.
Personally i take them out together, then loosen the convertor. if you do it while it's still in the car you have to keep crawling out to turn the engine over to get to the next stud and nut. I keep it on the hoist and swing the tranny on a bench. I keep the TC on the tranny then move the engine out of the way. then take the TC out in one motion. I always lay a pan down just in case. If you have help I would loosen the TC while still in the car. Whatever works easiest for you.
It'll be messy any way you look at it, it's just how big of a mess you make thats the key! Drain everything that you can, if you have a good engine hoist, and you trust it, you can undo the nuts on the converter once it's out, either way it's easy.
yea ive got 2 other guys lined up so hopefully i can have someone turning the crank while im down low. so once the dust cover is off i'll have plenty of room to get to what i need to get? all the other times i did this were with GM's so im not exactly sure what to expect. i just bought a used engine hoist, that looks brand new. i think the guy used it just the one time on his comaro engine and that was it. he hadnt even oiled the levler yet. if you seen the thread on my friend's nissan swap, thats my hoist. but in any case a 1000lbs of iron dangaling above me on chains is always cause to be a little nervous
If you trust your buddies you can jack it up and get underneath. Take the inspection plate off the tranny. Then have them bump the starter to turn the flexplate. Then disconnect the battery after.
Ahh, it's fun! the leveler makes it so much easier, I use one, I pulled the engine and trans out of my 73 myself, with 3ft of space between the wall and the front of the car. Sometimes I have found that the hoist may hit the lower control arms, so you may have to put 2X4's under the front tires, depending upon the size your running.
Its impossible to get the motor and trans over the front rad shell and keep everything level. No mentioned using a yoke in the tailshaft of the trans to stop all the fluid running out the back. I prefer to drop the trans, and convertor b4 pulling the motor. I made a plate to use on my floor jack, that fastens to the trans. Comes out easy for me and I do all my work by myself.4 convertor bolts, 6 trans bolts, and 2on the tranny crossmember. unhook starter and out she comes. I made a jumper cable with a push button , and hook this to the solinoid on the fender well and I can turn the engine over from under neath the car, with the Key in the ugnition shut off. Snap on tools make a jumper that does the same thing. JMO RON
wont the engine leveler give me enough movement to tilt the engine/trans as it comes up over the core support?
It will if you orient the chains properly with no problem. You may want to plug/cover the trans tail shaft opening or it will spooge red stuff on the ground.
ok cool. the engine already has 2 built in hooks i was going to use to get i out. ones in the back next to the EGR valve and the other is up front next to the PS pump on the oppsite side
yea i think im gonna stop by the local speed sho tomoro and see if he has any tail shaft plugs but i m not quite that far yet lol
When i pulled the motor out of my pickup (1978 f-150 w/ 460 and c6), i didn't realize that the fluid could come out the tail. Made a HUGE HUGE mess in my dad's shop. I would just drop the pan and drain the transmission fluid. if you reuse the transmission, i think it will need to be upgraded anyways. I would suggest undoing the tc bolts while still in the car since you have to get under it anyways. Good luck on your swap!
