I need advice on what to get for my Maverick. It's a four door 1973 with a 302 completly stock and only has 35,000 original miles on it. I have a $600 budget I was thinking of changing the 2 barrel carb to a edelbrock four barrel and also changing the intake and would I need some kind of adapter for the kick down? I was also thinking of getting a new air filter and heddmen hedders. Any other advise would be greatly apriciated.

Looks like you are on the right track. I would recommend a dual plane intake for increased torque down low and maybe a cam to match. Do yourself a favor and spend the money on a quality set of headers with a coating on them. Painted headers burn off quickly and rust right away. A basic K&N filter would do just fine.
Let us know how it turns out.:)

Did any one else find this, that the 2 bbl had higher of the line torque, then when i changed to the 600cfm holley and duel plane i had lower off the line torque but better higher end torque like when i was moving at like 40 or 50

For $600 I'd do some exhaust work first. The ceramic coating on Hooker headers is not worth the money. I dont know about the other brands. The headers are great though. A set of headers and a good free flowing dual exhaust (at least 2 1/4) would be where my money goes.

I agree once again with Mavaholic. Those cheapie hedman hedders are a great improvement for the money. Don't waste the money on coatings, if you ever take the hedmans back out, just wash 'em down (maybe have 'em blasted if you're willing to shell out a few $) and paint 'em with John Deere muffler black paint. Best paint I've ever used in high-temp applications!

    a totaly different note

with a limited budget like that IMHO I think a set of 3.55 gears and a posi unit would give you the best seat of the pants power feel. just my $.02

When I first built my car in high school (won't say how long ago) I added heddman hedders first, big difference. With $600 you still have money left over. I would go manifold and carb if you can. Get a dual plane with a 600 holley or demon (price?) I was running pretty much just that and dipped into the mid 14's. On 3.00 gears no stall and stock cam. The cam was my next movem, but for $600, do the hedders and then maybe manifold/carb. Just my opinion though...Scotty P

thanks for the replies . Everyone is taking about holley carbs is that what i should get and if so what extras would I need to go with it like some kind of adapter for the kick down. ( this is my first car to truly work on all my other cars were 90's and up so this is my training)

First thing I would do with a limited budget like that is an ignition upgrade if it doens't already have a Duraspark or similar. Then I would go after headers and a good exhaust system. Those two things alone will add noticeable power, driveability, and mileage.

Then if you have a little money left over, go to the junqueyard and find a V6 Pinto or V6/V8 Mustang II with an 8". Look for one with 3.40 rear gears and get the center section. It will bolt in to your 8" ( I assume you have an 8").

Go after the 4bbl carb and intake next, when you have more cash.
