Been looking for a good running 2.3 4 banger for my 80 Capri for a while now. Put a message out on craigslist and got a reply from a guy over in Stone Mountain who was doing a 5.0 swap on a '93 Mustang. He is selling me the entire 2.3 and EFI setup out of the car. Went over there to check it out today, guy has a driveway full of Fox Body Mustangs. We're standing there talking, and low and behold he mentions he has a '70 Maverick project car also, which I almost did a double take because I had not mentioned a thing about my Mavericks up until that point. He is putting a EFI 5.0 and T5 in it. We go check it out and it's a '69.5. Car is white with blue interior. I open the door to look at the door tag, expecting it to be riveted on the drivers side door like most 69.5's, and it's not. It's got a sticker in the door jam like 70+ Mavericks? It was a pretty late car, the VIN ended in 197xxx, but I couldn't see the build date because the sticker was messed up. Everything else was in line with it being a '69.5, from the shock tower braces, to the ignition, to the steering wheel. Anyone else ever seen a '69.5 with the sticker instead of the riveted on tag? I told him about this site, so hopefully he will be on here in the next few days. He has figured out a way to do coil over front suspension using late model Mustang parts, I don't remember all the details, but it's pretty cool.
My 69.5 has the sticker on the driver's door frame also but faded to the point of not being readable. There is a past thread from 2007 about my car being such a late 69.5 car. I thought that it might have been the latest one made. The Marti report and the Ford 999 both show that it was built at the St Thomas plant on October 27, 1969. It's VIN number is 0X91T234851. It has the key on the dash, the small transmission tunnel the rim horn, non staggered rear shocks etc. that 69.5 cars had but a real late build date. Who knows?
Yours is the 134851st one off the line, I found a 1970 in Toronto with the serial number of 357988, and it was the later style. They sure made a lot in 1970, I should look and see if the books I have for St.Thomas say anything about a date and the changes.
Maybe mine is actually an official 1970 model but they had some leftover 69.5 platforms that they wanted to use up first. But that doesn't explain the key switch location and other 69.5 parts that are there. One other thing is that the front suspension didn't have the lighter Falcon type stuff that the early 69.5's were famous for. It had the more common stuff. I guess we would have to talk to someone who worked at Ford near that time to get the true scoop.
This car was the exact same way, with the later suspension. It was also built at Kansas City, VIN was 0K91T197xxx. The only '69.5 I have seen so far built at Kansas City. My '69.5 was built at St. Thomas, VIN 0X91T167193, car was built July 15 or 16, 1969. It has the Falcon stuff. All 69.5's are "officially" 1970 cars.
I kind of meant officially official 1970's - with all of the common 1970 trimmings instead of some half breed. Did that make sense? :16suspect
The problem with guys the worked at St.Thomas back then is, there either dead, dying, or they drank so much at work, they don't remember anything. I've asked over and over, to them it was a job, nothing else.
I have a 69.5 built 9/12/69.VIN 0K91T173xxx Kansas City build. It has key in dash ,data sticker,Horn ring,Early shock tower brackets.I also have the Marti report.
Your car was built the day after my birthday! Maybe that's the difference, the Kansas City cars had the stickers to begin with. Joe, is yours a Kansas City car?
