I was wondering what is a good rpm range for a street cam and intake for my 351: idle - 5,500. Or 1,500 - 6,500
If you're shopping dual plane intakes, go with the high rise dual plane. And pay no attention to those rpm range numbers. They're misleading. High rise dual planes all work from idle to around 6500. The low rise intake will only limit your future mods. As for cam choice, you need more info about the motor, transmission, rearend and what you're looking for it to do.
So basically the engine parts can coincide anywhere from idle - 5,500? (The 351 is basically going to be a stock rebuild, with a cam and intake, 650 holley, and shorty 302 headers.)
As far as dual planes go, these simply aren't sensitive to the rpm range like a single plane is. I've used high rise dual planes on many builds and they all work from idle on up. Cam choice, that's what you need to pay attention to. What are you shooting for and what compression ratio are you going to run?
I basically want the best mild cam I can get, thats going to give me the most performance with this stock 5.8 rebuild.
I'd say look at something in the 204-224 degree range in duration at .050, lift will depend on your heads and valve springs. Basically you're looking for a hot "RV" type cam such as Comp's 268H, 265DEH, XE268H, Edelbrock 2182, Summit's K4400, any of Crane's Energizer cams.
