Hey people I need a little incouragement. In the past few days I have learned that the motor in my car is one of the gutless 302's. Also this is a 1974 four door and I have lost most of my motivation to fix this car up and make it a sweet street machine. I am considering just making it run good enough to get the beast sold then moving on to a different car. I did want to build the motor up until I was just this side of blowing the stock rear end but now I find that it would be eiaser and less expensive to change out the motor for a newer one. I guess it has just turned out to be a lot more work than I had planed on and now I am questioning if it is really worth it. What says you?
I say that everytime I plan something out with my Mav and say its going to be easy and will cost X amount of money, It costs twice as much and gives me 10X as many headaches. My opinion is hold on, dont rush, and most of all be sure its what YOU want to do. The worst thing is doing something and not being happy w/ it. I think that your the only one that can make the decision. I hope you choose to, cause when your done it youre going to be one of the few, the proud, the Maverick owners. Youll have something more original, not like the me 2 mustang club. I dont regret a single minute or dollar Ive put in to my car. Its my favorite pass time. What also helps is making a list of what you want to do and set times that you want it done by. Each time you get closer and closer to your goal, a beautiful Maverick. Thom
listen to thom.....we've seen this kinda posting on the borad before. all i say is this: keep it! some day when you have a lil more time knowlege and money, and a maverick goes whizzing by, you'll kick yourself for getting rid of it. as far as a "gutless" 302 goes... look around. you'll find a 302 from a 71 or so. i did. i guess in a long winded post i am just saying... be patient! you'll be glad you did!
Those are some sharp 4 doors, I know if I had a four door, J.hope's Blue four door pictured here sure would inspire me!
Still haven't set my feet in concrete one way or the other. So what do you think of this.... The excabilur style metallic gun metal gray. Paint Roger Rabbit on the drivers door and Jessica Rabbit on the Passengers door. Then just plain white rabbits like the one on the chicks sholder in the Matrix. One on each of the rear doors and one on the trunk lid and the names of my three kids in the ears of the rabbits. That is a thought that just came to me on night as I was driffting off to sleep on a cloud of cold medication. Then just make the motor run good and make it all shiny for show? That would be a good unique family car right? But a whole friggin lot of time $$$ and bloody knuckles.
Okay here is the deal. My wife had our first child on April First in 2000. Then she had our second child on April 13 2001. My son and last child was born on October Twenty Seventh 2003. A lot of my friends and family teased my wife and I about mating like rabbits. I was going to get three little bunnies tattoed on my back and put my kids names in them. Now I think I will paint them on my car instead of my body.
New2Maverick, Sounds like a 4dr is what you can use. Hang in there. Some of the others have some sweet looking rides. Mines still the work in progress. Hmmmm, let's make it into a Tijauna Taxi.
My two cents-- I was a single father raising three daughters for years, so believe me when I say I know where you're coming from. My advice would be to keep the maverick--they aren't going to get any cheaper as time goes by(neither will your kids), and if you get a plan and stick to it, you really can buillld a car and drive it at the same time(excluding cool necessities like more horsepower engine swaps). Take your time and don't be in a rush,,,, and you'll be surprised how things work out.
New 2 I'm not quite clear on what your looking for in an engine and HP....the stock 302 in my Comet 4 dr is quite peppy for a family cruising car. I gave alot of thought before putting my resources into the car because its gonna be the wifes car when its done which means it hauls my kids around too. Its built like a tank compared to cars of today and I don't have to hook it up to a computer to know whats wrong with it and its much less expensive to fix. Initially my wife didn't like the idea of giving up her Windstar(piece of crap) but after riding in and driving the Comet its grown on her...its a great cruiser imho and I can't wait for the day I can hang a "For Sale" sign on the Windstar.:bananaman
Decision Well I did decide to keep the car and just slowly work it up to where I want it to be. I know it is going to be a lot of hard work and it will suck down every spare dime I have but it will be fun and keep me outta trouble right?
