I took the car on a long journey across town yesterday. Got where I was going, did a burnout, went down the street, parked in my buddy's driveway. Shut the car off. Popped the hood, showed him the ride, went to start it up for him, forgot to mention, just got duals put on Sat morning. The car would not start. Pumped it a couple times, still nothing.... Took off the aircleaner, and to my surprise, there was gas everywhere. Pouring out of the sides and base of the carb. All onto the hot manifold. Pushed it back down the street, 30 mins. later, it started back up. Got her towed home, got 2 new base gaskets (it's on a riser pad, didn't know that when I rebuilt the carb a couple weeks ago). Sorry so long.... So I took it back out after seeing nothing was leaking, and after adjusting the carb again. Got to a store and again it wouldn't start, had to get pushed home. So I'm thinking I may have a bad coil, but why is the carb over flowing with gas. I did check the visible filter, and it's now full when idling. So is that a carb adjustment? The other day there wasn't that much gas in the filter at idle, now there's a lot. If someone could point me in the right direction, I would really appreciated it. Oh it's a 72 Comet GT, with a factory Holley 2bbl. If someone could tell me the base settings that would be great also. Thanx in advance
I agree. It's very likely that a small piece of trash has gotten in and blocking the needle from seating. Holleys are pretty simple. You can remove the bowl and blow it out with some pressurized air and reassemble it. You'll need to take the needle and seat out too and blow it off good. You'll need to be sure to adjust the needle and seat when you reinstall it. There should be a plug on the side of the bowl. You can remove the plug and the fuel level should be at the base of that hole when the engine is running. You can adjust the needle with it running, just be careful and do it slowly. Place some rags around the bottom of the carb to soak up any gas you may spill. If it still does it after this, you may have to replace the needle and seat. Good luck with it.
Thanx guys, just got off work. I'm about to go take the carb back off. Sounds like it should help it. Thanx again.
Thanx Guys I took the carb back off, pulled out the needle valve and indeed it was stuck. So I cleaned it again, then through everything back together, replaced the coil, and she fired up. It started dumping gas, so I adjusted the needle valve then it stopped. So now I have it running good now. Thanx again
