Hey guys. To start off I'm new to site and don't know if there is a topic such as this up already, sorry if I sound like a broken record. Currently I drive a 1993 Mercury Grand Marquis and am not disappointed what so ever. Over the past few weeks I've become infatuated with the Maverick and Comet and considered replacing the Grand Marquis with one (lack of work and funds makes it hard to put gas in the 4,000+ lb monster). I was wondering if anyone knows or what you get for gas mileage with the 250 cui straight six and the 302 V8.

    If you know, thanks.

A Maverick/Comet will probably not be as good on gas as the 4.6 you have now.

    Ditto!... mid 20's

Even though the gas tanks are smaller than what you're used to (I used to drive a Buick... huge engine, huge tank, never full of gas...).

My 72 Comet 200 six gets almost 25 in city driving (I take it pretty easy... the foot is the factor).

I hope to get the 2 barrel installed for smoother drive and better mileage... and extra oomph when I want it.

Don't forget.. these cars are peppy and weigh 2300 or 2500lbs instead of your 3500-4000 lbs. Well tuned and geared 6's and 8's can get pretty good mileage...

also check out the thread about driving "old cars that are easy and cheap to fix and fun to drive".

    Wiskey,
You need to run your car across a set of scales. The 70 and later Mavericks and Comets weight quite a bit more than 2500 lbs.

the '70 Mavericks has a curb weight of 2501 and the '71 is 2624 and the Grabber is 2679 (compliments of www.fordmaverick.com

roughly around the same weight as my father's 2001 Focus ZX3

Like I said - run your car across the scales. You are going to be surprised.

    Yeah but....

The original message was for a 6 cyl car... mine is a 72 Comet with no options and a 200 six and weighs 2350 according to my specs (I don't have a manual or anything... just info I got online).

The Mavericks weigh more than Comets, V-8's more than I-6's, and later model cars with power options & other luxuries probably have another 100-200lbs, so anything with a V-8 starts at over 2600 lbs I guess... but that's still a good 1/2 tonne below the Marquis (???) that was in the original message.

Besides... with all the rust, I think mine is about 100 lbs lighter than when it was new... :hmmm:
