I had a 351c in a 70 Mav for 15 years, total pain in the shorts, didn't cut the towers, special headers, and a lot of swearing when checking plugs.Put in a 302 based engine with newer technology and runs faster, plus life is a lot easier.Herb.

    Re: 351c

Runs faster . . . hmm interesting. Any idea how much faster? What kind of mods etc.? Just curious, I have always heard about the clearance problems etc. with the 351c, I have just been a little parcel to the idea because it is a little different. Any additional information would be appreciated. You got my attention on this one since you ran both. :)

i wouldnt have even asked about the 351C because when i paid for this engine i was under the assumption it was a 302..... and i was only getting the exhaust manifolds off it... but the guy just threw in the whole shebang for one low price of $120.... cant pass that up

where do you get your energy?

ive been reading a very strange thread. some guy wants to go thru all the trouble and heartache of pounding a 351C into a worthless 4 door maverick!
the cost of getting it in there is going be more than the car is worth. why not put your cleveland in the van? @ least it physically fits without a sledgehammer.
if you dont want to use a logical/economical/cheap to build 302, i strongly recommend you go find a junkyard 6.

one of these days you'll grow up and wonder what the hell your doing with all this crap, and how can you get rid of it.
money is a terrible thing to waste. please spare your maverick the indignity you are about to subject it to.
id focus on making it a running automobile, and inserting a cleveland is illogical

The cleveland fits into the bay of a mav,the challenge is the exhaust and plugs. To get the plug wires on or off I always took the valve covers off becouse I did not want to cut the shock towers back. The factory manifolds do not fit, the custom set of headers are still avalable through Tubular Automotive, but don't think it is a afternoon job. There is a lot modifications that need to be done to the pipes but they are a good start. You will need to also fab some special wrenches to get around all the bends to tighten the bolts.Dollar for dollar the cleveland makes great power. I have more money in just my windsor heads than I had in my whole cleveland engine. If I were to spend that much money on the cleveland it is possible it may have been faster but still ugly to work on.The c based engine ran 11.40s the 289 based engine runs11.00 the reason being 1- weight and 2-newer head technology. There is still more power to be tuned out of the 289.There is some pride in having somthing different like a cleveland, but we drive Mavericks so how much more different can we be without becoming social outcasts:clap:. Hope this helps. Herb.

Herb, thanks for the response. It's interesting to actually look at the times that you qouted. The Maverick with the Cleveland concept has always interested me, one because it is different, but more than that I guess is the fact that I grew up during the 70's and the 351C was an engine that I always heard about. It was an engine that people respected. I guess for me the Maverick is a great 70's car, and it would great to have a legendary 70's engine in it.

I appreciate the additional information, and I realize this kind of undertaking would be something that would take some good time planning to do it right, and not something that you would just try to do in a weekend.

    Thanks again! :)

well be prepared to be amazed.... cuz i dont care what i have to do, if i have to take off the whole front clip and make my own shock towers i'm gonna do it... ... besides i've been looking for a reason to beat the living crap out of my car for all the trouble it caused me with the dang 302 headers.... the guy that helped me get the 351c has plopped several C's in mav's/comets/mustangs... said all i need to do is beat it with a sledge hammer:clap:

William; I don't know how far I would trust the guy that helped you get the cleveland becouse you were under the assumption it was a 302,right?Are you sure it's not a 351m or 400?If you have already beat the hell out of the 302 headers why are you putting in a different engine in at this stage of the game?

Be careful that you don't end up with a pile of junk in the end. After beating on everything with a sledge...see where I am going?? The sledge was never designed to be used as a skilled tool for use on an automobile.

    Okay.......

I have cooled down a bit, and thought up a fairly friendly respnse. First of all- You asked specifically for everybody's opinion on which engine combo would be easier, and when they gave it to you- You got all riled up because it didn't match yours. Let me tell you from experience- these guys and gals on here will not intentionally lead you astray. All they did was give you their opinion, which let me say again- YOU ASKED FOR IT!!!!!!! Now then, if you don't like/want someone's opinion, DON'T ASK FOR IT!!
I know that sometimes you don't want to hear that something won't work, or that it won't be easy, but you have to face facts. They didn't say that it wouldn't work, they said it would be hard. Just close your mouth and open your ears, and you will learn something- Otherwise, just carry on. Country

Sorry folks, I had to do it.
