Mine's at the base of the column, and it's bad. I need to replace it, but I can't seem to look it up on the major parts stores' websites. Is this something that's typically not found in a parts store, or does it go by some other name? Where can I get one?

    Thanks!

Try "neutral safety switch" in your search

I'll do that and hopefully they have a pic, but I think mine is just for the reverse lights. It's a crescent-shaped thing with only two wires coming from it - one for power, and the black/pink one that goes out to the reverse lights.

One of the two terminals was broken off and I melted the hell out of it trying to solder it back.

You're right....it is a seperate switch. The reverse light switch is a crescent shaped switch that sits on the column. Do you have a 3 on the tree or auto transmission?

Auto. It seems like there were several of these things. There are some 4-wire NOS ones on Ebay, saw a 2-wire one with the wrong plug, some specific to '70, some for '72. And to complicate it further, my car was originally a manual column shifter so the column has likely been replaced. But from what year, I couldn't say.

Yeah....that makes it tough. I have a 3 on the tree and it is as you described....a crescent shaped switch. But mine actually has 4 wires. One wire that is looped, a 2 wire that goes to a connector, and another single wire that goes to another connector. I have a 75. When I put the car in reverse, the switch is actually moved to turn on the reverse lights. Keep an eye on Ebay....they come up every now and then. Good Luck!!!

That sounds like yet another variant. I'm thinking I can make a 4-wire one work if I have to. What I'm assuming is the 4-wire version must also be a neutral safety switch, and I could just use two if the wires, splice it into my connector and be done.

Why can't people just not walk behind my car?

I bought the one for my 73 on ebay. What year is your car? I think I still have another one from a different column.

OK, my 73 was also a 3 on the tree originally. I bought the switch and removed the man. trans b/u light harness and it plugged right in and works for n/s and b/u. I have 1 from a 71 or 72 in front of me right know. The plug is square with 2 male and 2 female bullet connectors. one wire is white w/purple stripe other is black w/purple. Red wire w/blue stripe loops from a male term to a female terminal. Does this sound right at all???????:huh::huh::huh::huh::huh::huh:

Problem with that is I melted the hell out of it trying to solder the broken connections back on. :slap:

No big deal though. 69.5mav came through for me, and now if I mow anybody down in a parking lot, it won't be because they didn't know I was backing up! (y)
