.....On the way to the alignment shop! Talk about a white knuckle ride! Every time I hit a standing puddle, the car darted sideways. Had to run about 35-40 MPH just to keep it in the road. Got it there safely, wasn't as bad off as I figured it would be. Caster and camber were within spec, toe in was off a lot. I have a little play in the steering box, fixing to go adjust that in a few minutes. The ride home was much better, just a little bit of bumpsteer from the gearbox slack, but no more darting! I was really surprised about the camber being right since I had cut a coil off the spring, but the machine said it was dead on. Now if I can get a weekend without rain, I'm going to take it over to Bama Dragway and see what it'll do. Ray done give me the fever!
Adjusted the play out of the gearbox and went for a test drive. The car still seems like it wants to wallow a bit, but at least it isn't darting from side to side like it was. I'm guessing a new set of shocks will work wonders....
Mine did that in the rain too before I got it aligned. Quite scary. How do you adjust that steering box, by the way?
I had the guys at the alignment shop check them again today to make sure I hadn't missed anything, all the front end componets are in good shape.... Looking at the top of the box, there is a bolt with a screwdriver slot in the top of it, with a 11/16 wrench size locknut on it. Loosen the locknut, and with the wheels straight ahead, tighten the bolt down as far as it will go, then back off of it about 1/4 to 1/2 a turn, and then tighten the locknut, holding the bolt with a screwdriver to keep it from turning. Too tight, and it will be hard to steer, too loose, and it will have a lot of play in the steering wheel. I just got back from another drive, went about 5 miles to go get some supper. It handles much better now, and really hangs a curve. I've got to get a speedometer cable hooked up, but at the speed I was running, whatever that was, it was really driving like it should have all along....
