I'm thinking it's a manual starter, do make sure your starter plate is installed between engine and bell housing. Also you wanna make sure you proper play between torque converter and flex-plate. Your getting there, Good Luck!
i hav that big plate that goes between the transmission and Motor. i reused the one that was between the 250 and that trans since the bell housings are the same. when i took the starter off the thranmission of though, when the car was I6 powered there were no shims or spacers or anything like that so i didnt add any when it came time to reinstall a starter on that same trans
May be you need that plate that goes between the block and the tranny. Mine does not have one but I have not had any problems with spacing.
Only plate is the one that goes between the block and the tranny. I have in the past ran without one, and didn't have any problems. For some reason, it looks like the thrust washer on your starter hung on the flexplate, and when it returned back, it drug it forward, bending it over the pinion teeth. I would think that if you had a big bell on the tranny, and used the small flexplate, that the starter wouldn't even engage the flexplate. Maybe the thrust washer was already bent when you put the starter on?
The block plate plays a very important part. If it wasn’t essential then Ford and all the other car manufactures would not spend the time and money stamping these parts and installing them on every engine. You need this not only to space the throw of the starter but it also spaces the crankshaft and transmission input shaft. If you want to see what the results are running without a plate see the pictures on the site, scroll about half way down the page. http://forums.corral.net/forums/showthread.php?t=892068&page=3
Wow you figured out how to remove the transmission without having to deal with all of those pesky bolts that get in the way...... Ouch that sucks
you may have the wrong depth starter for the your application. you need to measure the depth of the ring gear. Go from the starter mounting surface to the front edge of the ring gear.
You sure still a sad pic though still reading the whole thread they really chew on that dyno operator don't they....
