OK, I've searched high and low on here and on the internet, but I haven't been able to find anything yet. I need to get some interior paint and dye for my 1971 Grabber and 1971 Comet with trim codes 8E and 9E. I know its vermillion, but where can I buy the right color paint? I'm sure the Mustang shops have it in rattle can, but they have 2 types of Vermillion. The 70 Stang is just called Vermillion and is not metallic. The 71-73 Stang is Medium Vermillion, but is metallic. I don't think my interior is metallic, so that's why I'm stumped. I guess I could just buy one of each to see, but why waste 15 bucks when I have all you great people to help? The other option is to go to Carquest and have them mix me some paint to spray with my gun, but I doubt they will have the right paint code. Plus, I also need to get the dye too, which comes from the Mustang shops. Thanks.
I did a check on interior trim colors for 1971 Fords and Mercurys and 9E and 8E are both named Medium Vermilion Poly. The word poly is another name for metallic. The metallic flakes in the semi gloss interior trim paints are very small, making them hard to see. The paint code for the Medium Vermilion Poly is 71872. Your local CarQuest should have PPG paint chip books going back to 1971. The interior paint names and codes will be on the back of the exterior paint chip page. All they would need to do is cross reference that paint code in thier computer files to find the mixing formula and then mix you up as much paint as you need. The paint would need to be sprayed with a gun. They should also be able to mix up SEM vinyl dyes to match your soft trim. Ask to see if they have the color chips for the SEM dyes, then try to match one up to your seat color. Sometimes if you look under your seats you can find enough extra vinyl tucked past the hog ring clips to be able to cut off a small piece without it ever being noticed. That small piece of vinyl will never have been exposed to the sun, so it is rarely ever faded. That would be the true color of your seats, and the best thing to try to match up with the color chips.
Thanks a lot Jean, that is very helpful! I am going to go to Carquest today to check it out. If I can't get it there, I'll just get some rattle can paint for the 71 Mustang in Medium Vermillion Poly. One last question, is the dye also used for the plastic parts like kick panels?
Yes, the dyes can be used for plastics. You will need to pick up a few other things along with the dye. There is a special cleaner needed to remove contaminates such as dirt, oils and mildews from the parts to be dyed, and another called an adhesion promoter to soften the vinyls and plastics so the dye will stick. I don't have the part numbers for these products infront of me, but they are both made by SEM.
