my harbor fraight pitman arm puller didnt live up to the task today

and i thought finding a socket big enough (1 5/16'') and busting the nut off would be the hardest part, once i got the puller on it would pop right off

    guess not:huh:

the pitman arm thats going on (manual steering) was cut off of the gear box and the "stud" is still in it with the nut on the end

can i just bang it through or is it tapered or something that would require me to break that nut off and and bang it through the usuall direction?

The arm is cut or the stud is cut? If the arm is cut use a grinder with a cut off blade and put a slice in it on the part stuck to the stud...if you have one handy.

I personaly wouldn't be banging too hard on the box your going to use. Cut the one you don't need or want around the eye, slice it so it will split. Like Frank said, they are tapered so they come off towards the nut.

need to get a quality puller from a tool store that has high end tools, or stop a snap on truck. you might be able to rent one from one of the auto parts stores but they usually are not much beter than the harbor freight ones

Warm the outside of the pitman arm with a torch and the piece of sector shaft should come right out. You can also repeat this on the one in the car . Even a small propane torch will do the job if you're patient and move it around the outside perimeter.

It's not a good idea to heat anything to do with the suspension. These parts are heat treated and adding heat will make them brittle and snap under stress. You can tell heat treated metal by the color...dark grey.

Use a "real" pitman arm puller and get it good and tight then pop the pitman arm with a hammer at the hole where the stud is passing through. The shock wave from the hammer should make the stud jump off.
