I planing a mild 302 build up and would like to get my hands on a set of GT-40 or P heads to improve airflow. I have read tey came stock on Explorers but what year. Also, I have a Edelbrock F4B intake and stock manifolds ( a couple laying around ) and was wondering if there would be a problem bolting them to the heads. Thanks for your time and info.
The good stuff came on the explorers from 95-2001 95 -97 had the regulard gt40 heads. If you need the smog stuff in your head, those are the heads you want. In mid 97, they changed to the gt40 p heads, and also to an external egr setup, so the heads are non smog compliant for many vehicles. the p heads you are looking forward came on 98-2001 explorers. keep your eye out for the upper/lower intakes as well, as those are near identical to the gt40 intakes. the 95-97 had the egr setup, and 98 up did not, good luck!
If you run "P" heads you have to get creative with the spark plugs/header fit. If you go that way I can give you details on how I did it. For the money they're hard to beat, very good torque and flow numbers. Out of the box they beat most ported 302 and 351W's. According to one test I saw their flow will support nearly 400 hp, more with porting. With some port and valve work they approach some of the aluminum heads that cost 2+ times as much.
I might be interested in finding those heads when i get the mula. What all has to be done to fit the spark plugs? -Todd:confused:
special gt40 p headers. Do a search here, I seem to remember someone recently talking about what headers would work with p heads on a maverick.
I recently bought a complete engine from a '99 Mountaineer (Mercury Explorer) and I have the upper & lower intakes if anyone is interested. I had the GT40P's ported and dual springs from COMP installed put conversion kit on and used roller rockers, expect it to move.
