I replaced my filler tube on the '73 with a newer filler tube from a '77 (the unleaded cars - with the smaller hole and spring loaded flap). I haven't had a problem since. The old filler tube (regular) was horrible and splashed back all the time.
I would suspect it's because the old Regular gas nozzel was larger and did not have any vapor recovery.
but what if you go to a full service gas station...AH! no dont do it! you will screw up my paint job!!!
wait, why would a fuel cell not cause that problem. I know nothing about them other than the fact that they are installed in the trunk. They don't splash when filled?
I always assumed it was a "venting" issue like a continous never ending air pocket that slowed the flow down to the point it back fed......like the movie backdraft
A fuel cell wouldn't have this problem because it typically wouldn't be using the filler neck which causes it....
Yes, that's why. I can't remember when they went unleaded. Wasn't it mid '74 (the same time they got cat converters)? Whenever that was is when they changed the filler tube. I believe the real fix here is to convert the filler tube. Before I changed mine, I could splash it all over the taillight panel if I wasn't careful. Now I just fill it until it clicks - no problems.
I think John has it right, venting issue. My 84 stepside F150 does the same thing, if you don't pump it at the slowest setting, it can take 30 mins to pump 10 gallons. I always pump the Maverick the same way, slowest setting, and listen. When I hear it gurgling in the neck, I slow down even more.
Do you think the vent tube has collapsed somewhere (maybe the rubber hose between the tank and the steel vent tube)? I'm talking about the Maverick...
As stated before, the leaded nozzles were larger, to prevent people using leaded gas, they made the unleaded gas openings with the little door smaller. The door keeps the gas from splashing back on the 75 and up cars. All of my older cars will splash back if I am not there to listen to the flow. My worst one is my 70 Cyclone Spoiler that has the gas door behind the license plate. Dan
