I just don't see it, those cars are moving down the assembly line pretty quick, plus the expense involved in have some guy sit there, set up the machine, stamp the name, then toss it into the car...and to get everyone's name spelled properly? would have been way more simple for the dealer to do it.
You're proabably right. Makes sense. I bet Ford supplied the leather though. Surely they threw it in the trunk with the manual, floormats, stripe kits, antenna, and/or whatever else came in the "kit". Otherwise you would have variations in the leather size, shape, color, etc if they were sourced willy nilly by dealers.
Here's a pic of the dash plaque. I posted more pictures of when I got it on www.oklahomamavericks.com.
To me....that doesn't look factory. It looks similar to what I have seen...and very well could be a factory or dealer installed one....I just don't know for sure.
You've seen brass plaques on other cars? What years? I'm going to see if she can remember where it came from. If I find out, I'll let you know.
My Aunt had one on a 1979 Thunderbird she had. She bought the car off my Dad new. It had her name on a brass tag on the dash above the glove box. Her name was engraved....I believe the rest of the wording ("Made especially for" or something like that) was cast in plastic. The Maverick I saw with the leather tag had that tag on the dash in place of where it says "MAVERICK" ON THE DASH. It was a leather tag affixed to a metal piece.
I did some reading on Ford dash name plaques. 1963 T-birds had the leather ones that came with one of the trim packages. It came in the glove compartment blank along with the owners manual and the dealer would have the name stamped in. Those who had suggested that the Mavericks came that way have got to be correct. Just a tid bit of info I thought I'd share. I still want to see a picture of one and find out the dimensions so I can make a reproduction. Tommy
These dash plaques use to be a big deal for people, when I worked at a dealer in the 80's we use to stock blank ones it the parts department, if someone wanted one, a salesman would run over to the mall and have it made up. I remember those maroon and gold Cougars in 88 (I think) they all came with them, and jackets. You would think, if it was a factory option, we'd see it in the huge amounts of literature a few of us have collected, but there is no mention of it anyware, but it's the aged old debate that will never be solved, like the painted engine compartments.
Well, I agree that it is most likely a dealer installed item. I'm going to find out if she remembers where it came from. Good chance she will since she bought it new. Maroon and gold Cougars? Were these the cars with the gold trim instead of chrome? Sort of like the Bostonian of the fox body Cougar?
