I have been seeing two different paint types on mavericks and comets recently and just was wondering what way or if both ways are correct: This is my question ,The under hood painted areas, such as shock towers, fire wall, and surounding areas, I see some are painted black (like gm cars) while others are body color (like mopars) and just wanted to know if maybe different plants did them different or if they are being redone wrong or just owner preferance? I couldn't tell but it seems they come both ways ,as I seen a few low milage cars of each way. my 71 (35,000 miles) is black but I am not sure if they come that way or not? any help with my trivial question would be great it seems I spend more time looking at how those areas are painted on different cars than looking for parts.... maybe once I know the deal It wont bother me anymore. thanks.

i think it was different plants... its a really confusing topic lol cause cars that came from the same factory will have one black and the other body color

Steven, I'm guessing, does your VIN start with 1F :hmmm:

Cause it seems the Dearborn cars had the black - sometimes

My guess is they had a lot of old Model T paint to get rid of ............. :yup:

Thanks to all , and I thought I was just going nuts.!! If they come both ways I can accept that, (as a maverick mystery -good to know- ) because I am not going to restore this car ,but have fun with it. I will always wonder why they did them that way and some day may know why but till then ,thanks and I hope you all enjoy yours as much as I do mine...no matter how its painted,lol.... steve.

This has been discussed many times on here. No one has arrived at a definite answer as to why yet.:D

I see it has crossed alot of minds before, I didn't even think to look for an older post to look for it.. I should have, there are alot of people on this site that knows these cars inside and out .maybe some day we will find out it was done with some option or trim level, or what ever the reason, I am glad to have you all for suport on even the smallest of questions and that is truly great...nice to see more that wondered about it, and thanks again...and best of wishes with everyones cars.

I posted the same question about my Comet recently. What I have learned and I can't say for sure is it possibly relates to the build date. My 71 Comet was built in Kansas City in Nov 1970 and it is black. Another member has virtually the same car similar options same color same build plant. His car is body color under the hood. The difference his car was built in Jan 1971. Like I said I can't confirm but this is my thought on this subject.
