Yes a tachometer is allways a good idea.So is an oil pressure guage.

I use one. Lets you know what rpm the engine is running at for break in or for tuning purposes. Also lets you know when to shift if you hammer it.:)

I have a RPM guage and a mile per hour guage in my car and use them all the time. Except when I am not driving them, then they are useless.

Tach, oil pressure and temp, Water temp, and ammeter and/or volt meter are all worth having. They can help spot problems before a failure. I also have a water pressure gauge in one of my cars - yes, WATER PRESSURE - if you have ever blown a lower radiator hose on the freeway you realize that your temp gauge is worthless without water in the engine.

On topic, a tach is always good. Helps answer lots of questions.
    Off topic:
Never seen a water pressure gauge before.
Good idea really, but where did you get it?
Did you use a vacuum/ boost gauge?
    Pictures and details please.

PaulS has a good idea on the water pressure gauge! May be adding a couple. Thanks Paul!

Serious bracket racers use tach's in their automatic cars all the time. Thats how they know when to shift the automatics ;)

lol yea, that would be a good gauge to have if it was functional!

Also, as for a tach in a automatic.
    I can't stand not having a tach.

The Safari van I have now doesn't have a tach and it's driving me crazy. I will be putting a small tach I have laying around in it soon.

A lot of the hi-po bass boats use a water pressure gauge. So i would assume one could be bought from a marine dealer. Here is just a quick search on Marine water pressure gauge.

Having that sucker on my steering column makes my car go 15% faster. The fact that it is a vintage tach I bought off Ebay adds at least 10hp. It also goes all the way to 9000 which means my car can now rev that high.

Plus it looks cool and at night it lights up.

I dont have a Tach that i can see while racing, Only a shift light. I do have a digital tach in my ignition programmer that sits between the seats. But it cant be viewed going down the track. I just use the shift light. I use the data logger to see if my shifts were late or on time. Sometimes i have to move the shift rpm up or down to compensate for my alertness. You would be surprised at the difference that being tired can make.

You can use any pressure gauge to measure the pressure in your cooling system, though it should probably not need to read higher than 30 psi full scale. You just have to mount the sensor somewhere in the cooling system. I remember seeing the neighbor across the street having an oil pressure gauge hooked up to the raddyator on his Monte Carlo a long time ago and I had to ask him why he did that.
