I know there’s a 2.79 8” rear end… so a good 3.00 – 3.25 would be in my range… I really want to rebuild this rear end… do you think I could do it in a couple hrs? Are there kits to do this?

Yes, there are kits to do this.

I'm not questioning your abilities, but unless you have a buddy who's done a few (and a good press), this is a project that should be left to the pros or very experienced.

Personally, I've witnessed about four gear installs and would want an experienced buddy to guide me if I were to do one.

search www.google.com with keywords that pertain to your request.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the help… What’s so difficult with removing (guts) and re-installing the rear end?

nothing is difficult about tearing a rear end apart if you have the right tools and a good shop manual. If there is one thing I have learned about auto mechanics, it would have to be to not be afraid to go in there and try it.

"Check out the gear ratio calculator at:

    www.drivetrainsuperstores.com/calculate.asp"

Where does this account for overdrive vs. 1:1 ratio final drive trannies? It's a cool site, but the overdrive will effect cruising rpms.

Edit: I am answering my own question. Just take your rear end ratio, multiply by the gear ratio in overdrive, then use that as your rear end ratio on this chart.

nothing is too diffucult about it, its more of that fact of having the right equipment to do it. you will need a micrometer and mag base to do it yourself. plus if you do the install incorrectly and get your backlash or shims wrong on your gear mesh you can kiss the ring and worm gears goodbye. your better off finding someone that can set one up and watching him do it the first time. there is more to it than just earing it apart and putting it back together contrary to what some people have told you
